Crank down axles
« on: Dec 10, 2008, 04:38 PM »
Hey guys,

I got a question about crank down axles.  I understand how they work in theory but I was hoping someone had some close up shots of the way they mount to the trailer.  If someone has plans they want to share that would be even better but pictures are just as great.  I am thinking of building my own.  It can’t be that hard, I mean as long as I can get my cousin to weld it for me Hahaha!  :D

Anyways, if you have something that shows how these mount that would be great.

Grush.

P.S.  I did check out Gamedog’s thread which is great but I wanted some other angles of the axles.

i dont have pics of any axels, but i think there is a little more to building a trailer than some people think.  the axel (s) need to be perfectly straight and perpendicular to the tongue, or your trailer will pull to the side and wobble alot.

do it right and you can save alot of money tho!  post pics

The swing axles on my wheel house don't mount to the trailer, they run all the way through the frame. I have a tube that runs all the way through the frame and is welded to it. A smaller tube runs inside of that one and is welded on both sides. The walls of the center tube are about 1/4" thick. The actual part that does the swinging slides over this tube. Sorry, but I don't have pictures. The ones that I have seen that were welded to the side of the frame have spent lots of time in a welding shop being repaired. It seems that if you hit a big bump in the road they bend. I'm sure that others on here have a different setup.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

So what you are saying is pay for the trailer frame and build what you want on it?

That sounds alright to me.

I guess those wouldn't be a problem to make (i fabricate a lot) but if becomes a safety issue and cause more problems in the future I would rather pay more upfront and not have to deal with it again.
