Shappell DX 4000
« on: Jan 29, 2009, 08:53 PM »
I have owned 2 DX 3000, and have been very happy with both.  Now I think I would like more room, and have a quad for towing.  I'm looking for input from #4000 owners??  DEERJOHN

Great shack.  My buddy and i researched every foldup shack on the market and shappell 4000 is the ticket.  great customer service as well.  they had problems with windows cracking and sent me a brand new tarp this year to replace mine.

the new shappells have more, but smaller replaceable windows (velcro).  They set up quick and easy and there is a lot of room for two guys.  suggestion:  buy and extry roof tube for the middle of your shack and use it to hang your lantern.

I've been concerned  with the reversed fishing hatches, the DX 3000 hatches have always been on the same side.  Have you found this a problem??  DEERJOHN

reverse hatches are great as far as i am concerned.  seperates fisherman and offers more space. fish with two guys place a bucket in the middle for a table, and use a 20lb propane tank for heat.  plenty of room.

I've owned the 4000 for 3 years now and have had no issues with it.  The extra room is great and the reverse hatches not a problem.  There are times when I don't use the quad so having the option of the skiis was great for me.

I have the dx4000 too. all i can say is make sure your hole covers are secured or they will drop down and stop you right now, and send your stuff flying.
trust me i learned this the hard way ::)
and its heavy and seems too get heavier every year.

My brother bought a dx4000 this year and loves it.  Great shack plenty of room, but as stated find something to prop your hatches with, he uses his skimmer.

Simply drill a small hole in the top left corner of each cover and put a rope through.  then tie the rope off to the frame once you are set up.

hold door open

Check FIG 4

Thats what keeps the lids open.

Thanks for posting that link. that must be for the newer portables. mine came with velcro to hold the hatches open, and that lasted untill the first puff of wind, and that was all she wrote on that deal. >:(

I've got probably one of the oldest 4000's out there.  The DX wasn't even available at time of purchase.  I replaced the skies once (don't even use them any more).  Once the thing got torn up a bit in the wind.  Bent my poles a bit and I eventually replaced the support poles.  The thing is still my go to shanty if I'm driving my truck out.  Its got band aids here and there but that only adds to the character.  If it got stolen, I'd replace it.  If it broke, I'd fix it because all except the floor can be replaced from shappel.  As far a towing it with your quad, I bungee mine down to a different sled.  The skies are only for towing on foot.  If I'm walking I use my clam fish trap which is also the original.

I bought one this year. We had 4 people and a 20lb propane tank in ours, It was cramped a little but that cause the wife had her big comfy lawn chair. I like it. Best size for the price, I paid 325 with tax. Perfect for two people if you bring too much stuff like me and my buddy are guilty of. After I set it up a couple times and tore down by myself I got it all figured out. If it is windy it is a pain but that is with all suitcase style ones
