New bait rules ?
« on: Jan 11, 2009, 10:14 AM »
I know you have 96 hours after buying bait for the lake or pond specified on the slip you get from your bait dealer , you can bring them home first the law says and only bring a few with you each day. Can you leave some in the vehicle and only take a few onto the ice at a time so you don't waste alot or is that not legal ? Does it say on the slip from the bait shop what kind of bait you got? So if you got bait left at home after 96 hours and saved them for a week and then stopped and replenished your supply with the x-tra bucket which ones are legal and which ones are not!

Yes you can leave bait in the truck and use again next day on the same watershed. Unfortunately
you need multiple slips to fish different lakes within the 4 day period. Ie One dozen each day per watershed.
Yes still a bummer. A buddy and I wasted $35 in pike bait couple weeks ago when we could not keep
tip ups in the hole due to the wind and 50+ temps.

fished colchester pond today.  35$ in bait.1 pike very small, and a visit from Mr. game warden, nice guy asked to see my shanty because he just got the same one. dont know if he was trying to check up on me or what .  asked for our licenses and bait slip. Other than that he was very respectable. amen

JUST MY 2 CENTS, BUT I THINK THESE NEW LAWS ARE TEREBLE. THERES GOT TO BE DIFFERENT WAYS AROUND THIS VIRUS, OTHER THAN HAVING TO WASTE OUR TIME AN MONEY. JUST SEAMS LIKE ALOT TO GO THROUGH WHEN DONT EVEN REALLY KNOW IF ITS WORKING.
JUST MY 2 CENTS.

So if all thats on the receipt is transportation then those left-over bait you have at home you can use the next week as long as you get a new slip! you only need to get half a cup to add to the ones you already have! shhhhhh! ;D

VHS is definitely in the St Lawrence River, it will get to Lake Champlain eventually.  If you take water from an infected lake (Champlain) , put it in your minnow bucket , then take those minnows to Shelburne Pond, you risk infecting Shelburne Pond.  The virus lives in the water, as well as in the fish.

The rules were established to protect the fishery, not give fishermen a hard time.  Without the new bait rules , we may not have any fish to catch in a few years.

Agreed 100%. I am glad that Vermont has changed some of the laws, and some in our favor, and it is not something to be taken lightly. While I do not like to throw bait away (don't have to worry as much this year), I don't want my fishery ruined either.  I won't lye to you, I don't have much faith in our State F&G Dept, and I don't have a lot of use for the Wardens I have to deal with either.  I wish the State would follow through with some of the other issues ruining the Lakes and streams around here instead of waiting until it is to late and really screwing it up because they were trying to compensate.

Vermont doesn't have any good pike bait! the one time I was supposed to get some shiners at about 6" a piece the bait shop accidentally sold my special ordered bait to someone else. Down here in MA I cringe at the thought of using anything less than 7 or 8 inches for pike. We pay top dollar but it's worth it. anyone know where I can get some of this bait up there? I'm in the North Hero area.

esoxmaster, you can get good pike bait at Steves Bait Shop in North Hartland, VT.

Most complaints i'v heard is you should be able to use the bait on all bodies of water as long as you buy it from the dealer , if you are not getting fish on one lake you should be able to go to another with  the same bait! If the bait dealer sells it he's responsible! :o

Last year they held seminars on the bait rules,& i walked away understanding what they were doing a little better. As far as using the same bait from lake to lake, this is what they said as this question was asked. If the lake you are fishing is unknowingly infected with this disease it can easily be spread to another lake, that may not be infected as most guys add water to there bait bucket from the lake they are fishing in. Don't blame the bait shops who are selling it as there hands are tied & don't like this any more than you or I. The rules however are much better than last year. Might as well get used to it. I don't think things will ever go back to what they were a couple years ago.
A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work
