Vexilar Cold Snap gear
« on: Dec 02, 2008, 04:22 PM »
Hey folks.  Looking at buying Vexilar's Cold Snap parka and bibs but would like to know if anyone has these and if they are warm, wind proof and water proof.

Everyone I know has the blue suites and say they are great but I don’t know if the extra money is worth it.

Thanks

I have the Strikemaster Parka and bibs which are basically the same thing. I love them, they are very warm, wind proof, and so far waterproof.

Or spend a few extra dollars and get the I.D.I. Pro Arctic Armor Suit , it will not
only keep you warm it will also make you float if you go through the ice .

I have the vex bibs and have posted about them on here a few times- I was in grad school when I baught mine when they first came out so I couldn't afford spending more money on the blue or grey ice armor suit.

But to answer your question- I believe the bibs a are water resistant and not water proof. I've said before, unless u plan on getting real wet like sitting out in the rain for a long time I wouldn't worry about getting wet. I have used mine out on the boat when it was cold and raining pretty good and at the end of the day I did a have a couple small wet spots ( ithink mainly in the seat area), but nothing that affected me any.

I use them during the winter here on the Mississippi also when I am not ice fishing and we take some real cold longer boat rides at a pretty good speed and have never got cold or felt wind cut through. When on the ice, I have been in them in some stiff 20-30mph winds and still no wind cut through. They are wind resistant.

I love the way they fit, they keep me plenty warm, and for the money really you can't go wrong. I would buy them again. I really like mine!!!

Thanks for the responses guys!  Sounds like they will "suite" me fine....pun intended!   ;)

Ice armour I'm sure are great also...just can't justify the extra $180 for floatation when I have a nice vest type life jacket.

Thanks again guys!

I have owned the suit for a couple years and love it. I have been in brutal conditions and been comfortable - I'm sure you will not regret your purchase.

I have also worn this combo enough to appreciate the ice friendly features. Double zipper on the parka and pockets galore, including two security pockets that zip. As stated above they are fairly water resistant and warm, though I tend to wear lots of thin layers underneath. I could do without the logos all over, but that seems to be the norm these days.

I'm real happy with mine. They have heavy insulation so I only put on one layer under the bibs (polypropylene). Then under the jacket I use a cotton T-shirt, polypropylene shirt, and wool sweater. Unless it's really cold and windy I skip the sweater. There are plenty of pockets for all your stuff. With the 1,000 gram Thinsulate boots I only need one pair of cotton socks. I'm warm enough that I rarely need gloves for any more than the walk out and back.

I have the Vex suit as well. It's great. I've never been cold. And as stated before they have many ice friendly features. They are windproof and like someone else said not waterproof but fairly water resistant. The knees have added material to help when squatting or kneeling.

i got my vex suit last year for $50 a peice and if i had to get another i wouldn't think twice about paying full price. Great suit not only for hard water but also those cold days out on sturgeon bay when i'm chasing smallies.  ;D  I do have one question tho, I own the parka that is all black(top and bottom) and was curious if the one with the red top is any different? I know it comes with a emergency whistle, but is there anything else different about it compared to the all black one?
