first time perch eater
« on: Mar 16, 2008, 02:42 PM »
Hello everyone   This year was my first time with this website and i gotta tell you i got alot of good info from some very cool people. I also met alot of great people out on the ice due to ice shanty. I kept reading about all the perch catching that people were doing and was wondering how they taste. I never really targeted perch to the extent that some of you guys do. As a matter of fact i would throw them back if i ever caught them. UNTILL NOW. Courisoity got the best of me so i went to LG  and caught 25 perch. Would have stayed longer but ran out of bait. Today i dipped them in beer batter and deep fried them. OH MY GOD i can't believe what i was missing. They were delicious. Salt ,pepper & some tarter with a bit of lemon juice. Thanks to the shanty and your info i will be fishing for perch with a passion from now on. Im thinking of changing my name to perch addict.   The shanty has made this season for me the best ever and iv'e been fishin for a long time. Thanks to all.  Stay on top and tight lines

They are good aren't they? Try broiling them, they are great that way also.

If you liked Perch, you should try Bluegills and Crappie. Use the same Beer batter and try using a mixture of ketchup and horse raddish to make a cocktail sauce. That's what I use on all my deep fried panfish. Yum Yum

Funny, I always considered the other fish as the penance we had to pay for the blessing of eating perch!  Welcome to the program here at percheaters anon!  I'm on step 7 and I'm OK!! :D
Glad you are enjoying them.  Don't be afraid to try those 'gils and crappies also.   This is why a lot of us kooks go sit on a bucket in the freezing cold in the first place.
Stay Sharp, Be Safe,
Grady

hence, the terms "PANFISH" and "SPORTFISH"
bass and trout are "sportfish" and i don't really care to eat them.
perch, gills and crappie are "panfish" and are Delicious!!
grandpa told me-"never wrestle with a pig. you both get muddy and the pig likes it".

Invited a buddy to some perch dinner last week and he liked it so much,
the next day we went out and he was gigging them up for his first time.
Of coarse I had to teach him how to filet them afterwards,
he butchered a few but did get the hang of it. When he gave me back the
filet knife, it went from razor sharp to a butter knife. lol. Practice makes perfect.
First time I fileted perch I thought to myself "This can't be worth it." Oh how wrong
I was.

The beauty of perch fishing is, you NEVER run out of bait.
No minnows?  Use their eyes.

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.
