Ice Fishing Spuds
« on: Feb 29, 2008, 02:12 PM »
I have been reading all of these postings about ice spuds and obviously not to many old time ice fisherman are answering these posts.Ice spuds were originally used for making your fishing holes before there was such a thing as augers.I just started using an auger about 8 years ago and if it wasn't for 4 shoulder surgeries I would still be using an ice spud.

Yeah why???  I've been ice fishing for 30years and can't get enough of the new technology...Spoon augers sucked big time.

Been there done that before.Spuds are fine I think for early ice 4"-6" but more than that give me an auger anyday. I've hammered out hole in close to 2 feet of ice with a spud, why ?? its all I had. I started what looked like a large hole only to finish with looking like maybe a 6" hole.Nevermind being close to having a heart attack..LOL...and sweating like I was in the heat of a death valley summer.

I'll think I'll stick to using an auger.

Perhaps chopping through ice all those years are the reason you needed shoulder surgery!! ;D ;D

Just kidding.  You old school guys are nuts.  I'm all for people using a spud bar, but personally, I prefer fishing to chopping ice.

We used spuds years ago. Made them in shop class. Nothing gives you the creeps more than using  a spud on 3" of ice. Yeah we were young and stupid but poor too. Hearing the ice crack brings back vivid memories while using that spud on the thin ice. Not for all of the tea in China would I do it now. Modern technology is the way to go with some exceptions............ ......

I'm all for new tech. but if you know how to use an ice spud it does'nt take much longer to make a hole.I guess i'm just old school and I used to like the excercise.O Well,as long as we are on the ice and fishing it does'nt really matter how you do it.

My old ice spud has seen its day as well as me for that matter.  Hand augers and Lazer Mag. have taken its place.  I wouldn't be without it on early ice though for testing the thickness for safety.

Believe it or not spoon augers are still out there ,I saw a used one for sale at a bait & tackle shop in Liberty,NY. earlier this year . I started with a home made spud lost it down a hole . Winter of 1994 unusually cold for southern new york around 24 inches of inch purchased a hand auger (modern style have not gone back since )
Good remainder of the ice season to all of you .                               Steve
