Loud cracking on Choumont Bay
« on: Feb 22, 2008, 07:07 PM »
Was out on Choumont Bay Wednesday, and I heard cracking all day. Ive heard preasure cracks from a distance before, but never this intense. It was a cold day. Does anyone know what causes that.

As the temps drop the ice expands and the cracking sounds is the ice bustin up to make room for more ice. When the sun comes out and it is seeming to warm up it is actually driving the frost and freeze deeper into the ice and causses it to crack and pop some more.Fishing on fort Peck once and thought a low flying jet was coming through breaking the sound barrier and after the initial boom it was like the sound of a freight train for about a 1/2 hour. 10 minutes or so after the big boom the ice in the bay where we were really started cracking and popping and that went on for several hours. would have like to have seen the pressure ridge that one was forming.  :)

You haven't seen a real good pressure crack until one passes right in front of your shanty and you see water spray up out of the ice.  Had that happen a few years ago up on the St. Lawrence when we were fishing the K of C derby in Clayton.  The best part was we had a newbie with us.  It was hilarious to watch him try and pile out of the shanty while yelling "we're going down, we're going down"  :roflmao:

Yeah Grump, for a fraction of a second your heart does jump a little.  Then you smile because you know Ma Nature is just making more for you to drill through.  ;D

I was up that day with Reich 607 and he is right, it was nerve racking and humorous at the same time. Not to mention we were both hung over!!

I was out with a buddy for his first day on ice and it was popping and banging all day, best part my buddy weighs about 400 lbs he was scared sh**less all day. By the way there was 14" of ice. We were watching cracks form across the lake all day.

I must admit after 40 years of ice fishing that first loud pop of the year still gives me the willies
Wishing I was Fishing

There is some huge pressure ridges and cracks. This year we have a good ice base and the usual cracks run from tip to tip on the points and across some of the bays, but this year they are in different spots with some serious ice movement.

If we get a strong wind from the west or south the ice will make some noise as it is packing it and pushing it into the bays.

                                                                                                                        Stay safe and dry

Yup its just making ice, a little unnerving. Just like sitting in your tree stand in a 30 mph wind. Swaying in the breeze is not for me!!!!!
