Bait dealers?
« on: Feb 22, 2008, 03:27 PM »
I don't want to offend anyone who is an honest dealer but man, I'm tired of getting screwed! This is the third time I got screwed on bait this year.  I purchased some bait today at a local dealer and I asked to see the large shiner's. He shows me they look great he loads them and packs with air and puts them in my cooler. I get home pull them out and I have two maybe three the size he shows me and the rest are small maybe medium at very best.... I have never had a problem in the past , maybe one or two under size not a big deal. I intend to contact them or go back for a visit and see what the deal is. It's just with bait costing what it does I expect to get what they say they are small, medium, etc!  Anyone else run into this?  >:(

No, I buy my bait at Stones in Lewiston and always get what I pay for.   Think the dealer screwed you on purpose?  I have bought bait up north and have half of them go belly up by the time I reached my destination.  Thought it might be contamination of the bucket but bought bait after that in the same bucket without problems.  Bummer you didn't get what you paid for.

with the way shiners are going this year be happy that you got any large shiners
They are going to be almost impossible to get any more.
Every body gots there own opion on what a large shiner is but most of them are run
throught graders at bait shops or should be.

The Best Bait dealer I have found is Mike's Live Bait, 140 Shaw Hill road in Minot. All his bait no matter what size is $4.00 a dozen. I always get what I ask for and never had any go belly up.

We trapped a bunch of ours this year, and bought a bunch.

We try to sort by size as well, although we don't use one of those mechanical... holes in the bucket sort of sorters. Shiners do last a long time if you pick up one of those cattle waterers, and a filter at Walmart. Then you can have your bait year round.

Too bad you got screwed. Dads and ourselves will let our customers hang out while we dip... (as far as I understand). When i buy bait thats the way I like it too. so you can peek in the tank and see what you're getting before or as you are paying.

There is always some size range, so when our wholesaler comes in it is understood that there can be some size variation. I feel it is then the responsibility of the dealer to sort what is too small to be large, or too large to be small.

Hopefully you will be able to get everything squared away when you go back, no one wants to lose a customer over a few shiners.
I caught you a delicious bass, wanna play me?
