Jet Sled Hitch Repair?
« on: Feb 20, 2008, 10:48 AM »
Anyone ever have the sled end of a Jet sled hitch come apart? I have a hitch that the small eyebolt that sits in the tube of the hitch got pulled out. I still have the eyebolt but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to fix it. It would appear that when its first assembled there are two nuts placed on the eyebolt. One nut up hear the end of the tube and the head of the eye to stabilize it in the tube. The other nut is on the end of the eyebolt with a small washer just the inside diameter of the tube in front of it. Then it appears they "crush" the end of the tube and shrink the diamter and that washer and nut backing it are what holds the eyebolt from pulling out. It would appear that on this on the nut backed of and subsequently that washer no longer held the eyebolt and the whole shebang pulled out. I'm trying to figure out I'm going to fix this given that I have no was to reach down in the tube and reinstall a nut on the end of the eye bolt while its in the tube. Thoughts?

I think it would be easier to buy new. The only other way is to find a piece of pipe that will fit inside the tube then cut off the end that holds the eye leaving enough for the splice. Put the eye back in then slide the piece of pipe inside the tube and the end with the eye and pin them together. If you can't find a piece ot pipe then maybe a hardwood dowel.

According to a lot of guys on the other thread, you can fix it with super glue! ;D

Honestly, I had that happen to me a couple years ago.  I made a temporary fix and then just bought a new one.  It kept coming back apart no matter what I did.

Well, I"m that guy thats short on cash right now, so...... I temped it. Added a nylon stop nut onto the eye bolt so it won't move, gave it some good separation from the other nut up by the eye.......and used a hammer ;D ;D.   I basically lightly collapsed the pipe between the two nuts and then again between the last nut and the eye bolt on the very end. The plus side to this is, that in order to break again its going to have to expand the pipe to a diameter suitable for the two nuts to make there way out. Then I'll "fix" it again the same way!

The same thing happened to me last year. All i did was crush the end with a hamer and drill a hole in the crushed end. It seams to stay on the sled better then it did before. Not sure how long it will last but Iam on part of two seasons. I also tape the ends of the pipe to the bplts on the sled, it never comes off now. A friend of mine bought a new sled up to Bait, bolts, and Bullets in Solon, not sure of the brand but a much better sled

funny just fixed mine last week take the hitch part off the end with the bolt  removed slid a new washer down the pipe and 2 new lock nut went with a 5/16 eye bolt 6 in long put a lock nut on the eye bolt then a washer slide it in the pipe used a long piece of threaded rod to hold the lock nuts and washer in the pipe so i could start the lock nuts on the eye bolt tightened the eye bolt right up tite until the washer  and lock nut on the out sidee tightened up tight against the pipe ten backed it off a half turn so the eye bolt could swivel if the eye bolt looks like it is coming out of the pipe in the future then i know the nuts are backing off  then it would be time to tighten the bolts again remember i used a 6 in eye bolt not that short 2 in they put in
in god we trust

get 2 turnbuckles w/ bodies the size of the pipe . tap the body of the turnbuckle into the pipe. reinstall your eyebolt. drill 2 holes thru pipe and tunbuckle and put 2 bolts w/ locknuts. will never come apart! just make sure you drill the bolt holes far enough back so it doesnt interfer w/ the eyebolt going back in. good luck!

Yeah, I don't have a village, pretty much just me and a small soft sided soft bottmed shelter and the usual gear. That and I'm almost always on foot.
