Where do u put your bait?
« on: Feb 14, 2008, 06:02 PM »
I have talked to many fisherman while on the ice since i started icefishing 10 years ago. One subject that i continue to get very mixed awnsers in the the depth you but your bait at. Some go with the theory that because the eyes of a pike are on the tob of there head they put the bait more upward in the water collum so they can see it better. Others swear by putting the minnow right on the bottom. Where do YOU put your bait in the water collum?

I put live minnows 3 - 6' off the bottom.  I fish dead baits within 1' of the bottom.

It all depends on a lot of things. Best to play around depending on the water and the fish your fishing for.
Myself I fish right under the ice or 1' off the bottom.
You'll find me over the deep water.

We've had pike hit bait just off the bottom and just below the ice.

I generally fish established weed beds.  I like to place most of my bait 6" to 1' above the weeds. But, I check the bait regularly to make sure the bai is out of the weeds.  I may put a couple higher in the water column if action is slow.

If I am fishing rocky/sandy bottoms, I will mix up the presentation and attempt to establish a pattern.

I put mine just a little off the bottom and the rest at different depths to see what works

suckers dead and on the bottom. don't need to keep the bait alive, plastic baggie is light and easy. otherwise live suckers near the bottom, iceicles i like to put 15'-20' up off bottom.

For lakers, I like to use both dead and live bait.  I put some tip ups on the bottom and some just under the ice.  As Reubenpa what happens when you put a tip up just under the ice on a lake that has lakers.
