Well a hammer is cheaper than an auger! I carry an awesome hatchet I picked up at yard sale for $2. It is a regular hatchet with a nice hammer head on the opposite end. It has to be 40 years old or more. I use it to break open old holes when I am in an area where there have been a lot of people the day before. My biggest fear is loosing it down a hole. I may put a lanyard on it.

Having no auger is a hard way to be. Can't do to much fishing that way. Here's to the effort.

When I was a kid the only way we got a hole in the ice was with an Ice Spud.
It seemed like it took hours to chop a hole, especially if the ice was three ft thick.
Seems like every time I broke through the spud would leave my hands for the bottom of the pond.
My father would sure be pis**d, He made our spuds where he worked so at least he didn't have to buy them.

Thank god for augers!!!

I've watched a couple of guys trying to cut holes with a hatchet.Surprised the heck of when I heard the constant thumping. It was quite painful to watch.I finally went over and let them borrow my hand auger to drill some holes. They asked how much it was and where I got it, told them and the next day I saw them with a new auger they had gotten at the shop I told them to goto.Well I made a couple of new fishing buddies only for a couple of days , I never saw them again.
