It seems like on many lakes crappies have a lull right after it gets dark and then bite on and off all night. You just never know until you try.

It all depends on the water you're fishing...most clear water lakes up here they bite off and on all night, sometimes they bite best just before daybreak, other times they bite like all hell as the sun is setting...I'd try it...what have you got to lose?

Again it depends on the lake and the forage. They may hang around an area or piece of structure for awhile, then all of a sudden start to roam. I imagine they are holding close to forage and then as the light changes other forage becomes available which causes them to move. Most likely zooplankton starts to rise during the evening/night and this is what they are seeking out. If there is a zooplankton "bloom" on the lake then evening/night time should be good times to fish for them.

yep like outhers have said it depends on the lake i have a couple lakes by me the one is a sun set till about 8 to 9 pm then the outher is a 2am till 8am for the big ones so if we want to tipup fish at night we hit the first lake till about 11pm then jump to the outher one by 1 am they both have good pike action all night so this way we can jig and catch fish all night long waiting for the pike so just try it and see what happens
early mornings,cold north winds,hard ice,good friends and cold high life..FLAG UP!.priceless

Remember this::: All fish require about 2 hours for their eyes to addapt to the change in light from day to night.
While some fish will turn on at dusk for a short time, there is then a lull until they can see again. The action should regain speed after approx. 10:00 p.m. Good luck

Exile, going out to night fish at 7pm is way to late. When the sun gets down to the tree line(about 1/2 hour before sunset) is the latest that you should start.
As perviousely posted all lakes are different as the bite goes on during the night. We have caught them almost up to sunrise on some lakes here.
You have to put in your time on your lake to learn the patterns.
