MI first-timer
« on: Feb 13, 2008, 07:20 PM »
Hi all,  Thinking about heading north to enjoy some of your good ice. Would you guys recommend targeting Houghton/Higgins for a four day trip? Looking for perch, eyes and or slab gills. Usually hit Presque Isle in Erie several times each ice season, ice hasn't cooperated very well this year. Ice in east central Ohio not coming along, heavy snow not helping. Have vex,vu willing to put in the work for some good fishing, need to have foot access, no quad or sled. Thanks in advance.  Kevin

Go to Cadillac or Mitchell in Cadillac, stop at the sport shop between the lakes just before the state park and have a ball!

Higgins does not have eyes or gills but does have perch. Houghton has all 3 of the species you desire..Good luck though w/ not having ice transport. Both lakes are VERY HUGE and there is nothing in Ohio that even comes close to in size. At least nothing I know of. Houghton has had good reports this year for the first time Ive seen in a few years. I only fish it when Higgins is not ready. Good luck. Look for the shanty towns they are usualy  a good indicator that there are fish to be had near by.
"Oh honey don't worry ice fishing season is almost over"     Oh Yeah, then we got steelhead, then bass, then big lake salmon, then fall river salmon........etc.

If your looking for Perch might want to look into Lake Saint Clair, the water ic clearing up now shouldn't be long until everyone is gettin into them. Many places to go there, just a thought it can be exellent there.
