I have a set of five 26" Jack Traps and one Big Bob.  Never had a problem with wind flags or not being sensitive enough for smaller perch.  Easy to maintain.  Built like a brick ___ house.

If you haven't seen them you should checkout the Allagash traps. I bought myself some 31" Jacks last year and wish I had seen the Allagash then. They have better feature than the Jacks. Drag feature on a metal spool, stainless steel flags, copper trip tube, no "o" ring to set the flag, etc. The only thing that is not equal to or better than the Jack is the finish. That being said the Allagash traps are $26 and the 31" Jacks are around $38, you can get plenty of spray urethane for $12 per trap. I bought both of my sons allagash traps for their January birthdays.

I think the entire state of Maine would disagree.  (After all, these traps are also called "Maine style" traps)

Why wouldn't they work?  The spool is 15" underwater, the trip rod is inside a tube with lube, the point of contact of trip rod/flag steel is well above the ice.  The hole freezing up doesn't affect the function of the tip up, but rather getting your trap out of the hole without spooking a running fish when you get a flag.  If that becomes a problem, just make some hole covers from foam insulation.

Thats news to me also. My Heritage Lakers must not have gotten that memo. They worked fine in -30 below last year in North East Montana. Me thinks your confused :cookoo:.

I almost forgot to mention 2 tip ups I bought last year just because they were 9.99 (and hey you can never really have too many tip ups.. ;D) at Gander they are called Hardwater Explorer and for the price they really can't be beat there kinda like cheapo Lakers. I thought I'd mention them for anyone looking to get into the sport not wanting to spend 20+ bucks.

I guess my jack traps missed them memo also on that below 10 it should stop working.   otherwise i dont think they would have kept tripping every time a fish decided to nibble on them two weeks ago when it was 6 degrees out with wind blowin over 30mph.   I'll make sure i pass the memo onto them when i get home that they need to stop all work at below 10 degrees

I like the Frabill Pro-Thermals   They insulate the hole somewhat, and u can see the spool turning without having 2 b on top of it

I'm glad to see some people have good results with the Frabil pro-thermal tip-ups.  I received a gift card to cabela's for christmas this year and picked up 4 of the Frabil pro-thermals b/c that is all they had left and they were on sale for $14.

I'm hoping to get them in the water for the first time this weekend.  They look pretty sturdy and I like that they will keep the hole nice and dark.

Beaver Dam Stlye tip ups don't handle heavy snow well cause they get buried quickly. If the snow isn't comin down fast or blowing they're great.

I have a problem, with the Pro-therms that I have in that I keep missing fish. Some suggestions have been to try a treble hook, but I think it's just the craftyness of the prey. I wound the line on in a clockwise direction, and I have caught fish on these tip so, I wonder if some other solution is out there. I'd rather not use trebs because of mortallity.

I use Maxtraps made by Brian Maxham in East Dixfield ME. The trap is a basic jack trap design, but the reel set up is way better. Instead of a alum 4 piece reel that begins to fail after a few seasons, these have a large high line capacity plastic reel with a locking wing nut (drag control) for large bait. They are great for any fish from perch to pike.
The web site is www.maxtraps.com

Also these are the first traps to get run over by snowmobiles.  very low to the ice and very hard to see until its to late. I would not recommend these traps to anybody that sees any significant snowfall

Beaver Dam by Arctic Fisherman. http://www.beaverdamtipup.com/benefits.cfm

I looked at the Jack Trap and Lakers, but I don't like the free spooling look of them. I like to see the spin trigger as I am approaching so I know if the fish is moving or not before I get there.

In my opinion Beaver Dam's are the sturdiest, most reliable on the market. They take a beating and need very little if any maintenance. Regardless of the weather they have never failed me.

What is the best tip up on the market? I have a mixed set of almost every type imaginable and am wondering what is the best so I can upgrade.

there is no one best trap.  Depends on where you are and what you are fishing for.  Here in PA, i'm usually fishing for bass, picks and perch with less then 12" ice and hardly any snow.  What works here will not work up north with 2 feet of ice and a significant snow cover while you are fishing for pike.  Try a few and see what works for you.
