Looking for NEPA walleye???
« on: Jan 18, 2008, 09:22 AM »
I have not had much success catching Walleye. I'm trying to find a good location around Carbon or Lehigh County. I'm not going to be around this weekend (work :'(), but I'm hoping to get some hits on this topic so I can go out Monday morning. Any info would be great and greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.  8)

Good luck.  In my experience, most of the walleye fisherman are pretty tight lipped.  I don't know why.

It's because there are not that many around, and once you figure out how to catch them you tend to guard that information. Especially the "where" part.

Aklimbing- I'll send a pm.

Not too good for ice fishing but the Delaware river has good populations of walleye. For ice fishing the Pawpac is the only lake I know of where you can catch them in reasonable numbers. For the counties you have listed Beltzville has walleye in it but they are very few and far between. I hope this helps but the north east just is not prime walleye habitat..

Byron,
Don't get me wrong.  I am in complete understanding of this.  One thing I don't get though, is how hard it can be for someone who's new to the game, like me, to get some information on how and where.  Now, I'll be honest, I wouldn't expect a person to give up exact information, not for walleye, not for any species.  But, general answers would help a great deal.  I can't say that I have never gotten info, some of which was given on this site, but its few and far between.  Just knowing that they're in a lake is a start, but general ideas of where to look always helps as well as maybe lure selection or bait selection tips.  I also understand that part of the problem is not knowing the person you may or may not give info to.  Will they keep it to themselves or share it with everyone they know?  Are they a kill 'em all kinda guy, or do they believe in conservation and selective harvest or catch and release?  It's much easier to give up information to those that you know than those that you don't.

FF,
Share it with everyone????   What gets typed on here (PA General) is available for everyone in the world to read.  So I can see why someone wont name spots.  I'd say the best place to start looking for info about targeting a certain species is the PA Fish Commission website.  They post lake reports of what they have caught in their survey nets.  You can contact fisheries biologist with the PFBC in your area that know the species you're after and can probably start you in the right direction. Once you find a lake/river you want to try then keep hitting it until you figure out a pattern for success.  Talk to fishermen there and baitshop owners.  It will come together for anyone who puts the time in.

Don't expect anyone to give away so easy for all on the internet what they have worked to find.  I don't mind sharing some of what I know..... more of the how I've caught them than where I caught them.  I save that for friends who do likewise with me.  I kind of enjoy piecing some of the pattern together myself anyway.

Don't know jack about carbon or lehigh - sure, the monster lakes like beltzville or who knows what else might be your best bet, but just give it some time, as soon as the susquehanna freezes in wilkes barre, that'll be almost a guarantee.  I'm sure places like that exist on the big D, I've heard plenty coming from Narrowsburg about big walleye through the ice, but around carbon and lehigh, maybe if some monstrous pool on the lehigh were to freeze, you'd be able to hit a few, but that needs one hell of a freeze (where as the big pools on the D and susquy are calm, slow moving).  That's my advice.

jig-jig Thump,
I think either I mispoke, or was misunderstood.  I don't want spots.  I wouldn't give them and I wouldn't expect them.  I would possible give general areas, but when I say locations I mean things like main lake points or secondary bays or eddies associated with feeders, etc.  I actually generally am looking more for the how's than the where's.  Believe me, I know all too well what happens when a little bit of information is shared in the interest of helping on the web.  Next thing you know you're out of places that you used to enjoy fishing.  i enjoy figuring it out too.  I also find gathering information enjoyable as well.  Thanks for the tips and tight lines.

FF,
I hear you now.  Well here's another little something you might try here on IS.  Take the opportunity to send a PM to someone who you sense knows a little bit about what you're after.  Stay on their good side in a non-threatening and hopefully shared manner- where you can maybe offer them some helpful info to improve success and you just might find what you're after.  Generally doesn't work if you try and bring a crowd with you.  If so, only works that way once.

Good luck and stay positive.

Well I'm not much help for those county but I can help a little bit closer to home In Tioga Co. Hills Creek has a few in it as well as Beechwood I have never had any luck on Wallys but Byron gave me some info that I will try in the future. The best way to get Info on here is to send PM to guys that you think know what there doing. I get lots of PM on the Lakes in Tioga Co. and I'm more then welling to help almost anyone out as I have been lucky enough to have been helped out when ever I need it.

The fish commission is trying to build the walleye population up on the lehigh river with yearly stockings, But your best bet is the Delaware river, wallenpaupack or belmont lakes

Just got back from work  ;D. WOW, Thanks for all the advice. Covered all kinds of topics and even some healthy debates I did not expect to arise. Its great to see how some good people could be so open minded and also mature enough to agree to disagree. I will continue of course to monitor this topic. I especially thank those people who sent me PM's. Take care and hope to see y'all on the ice.
