Valpo Chain
« on: Jan 16, 2008, 09:59 AM »
Went by Long last night starting to skim over still open on south end and @ ramp checked somme ice @ edges 1/2"- 5/8". went back this morning (couldnt take it) no noticable change.
went by spectacal-loomas. loomas is open.  no change this morning.
Whet by flint this am a lot of open water.
Hate to admit it but we have a long way to go IMO before we have safe ice.
Sat dont look good, hope i am wrong  >:(.
should be good by mid week!!!!
I think I will plan on some honey-do's this weekend. Rack up some brownie pts before we get some ice!

My guess is Monday, Tuesday for sure-smaller lakes that arent very deep. Willow Slough, Channels at Maxi, and maybe the cove at Loomis all for now-be safe.

I had to see what was up for my self.  Went to Long, and ice was sketchy out in front of ramp.  I could see that someone had been out checking ice, but right in front of the ramp there was about 1/4 inch of ice, then 2" of water, then about 2" of ice again.  I'll bet by morning that will all be solid.  I saw 3 shanties out on Loomis Sunday evening in the Crappie hole.  Any one from the board?  and there was one guy in the  bay at Spectacle.  I am going in the AM will report back then.

Al, just got back from checking the ice at Loomis, by the beach area there was a solid 5-6 inches, 4 guys out, said they caught crappies and walleye's last night in 7 feet of water, going out right now. My cell phone is dead, so don't bother calling. I'll post when I get back tonight. C-ya. Crappie Rob.

Was out tonight with a couple buddies, caught 30 crappies, all 6-7". Every crappie I've caught this year on Loomis have been extremely small for this lake!!! They are out there, just not in the usual spot. Dave Genz would call that fishing memories. You always go back to the same spot, I know better, but that walleye last night took me back to the same spot, go figure. I will venture out again, but will try something different. C-ya. Minnows, with glow jig or jigging rapalas, are my favorite.
