Any advice to offer as to which would be better and opinions as to why?? No way in heck can I afford to buy both but am definitely interested in getting one. The Vexilars seem to be tricky but I have heard that once you learn to use them properly they are an amazing addition to your arsenal. I just don't quite understand what it is they do ... depth finder??fishfinder??you can identify your jig and can tell when a fish is near it?? All opinions and any advice welcome
thanks in advance!!

I would saw definately a flasher. THe camera doesnt' work so well at nite or in cloudy water and unless you have a down viewing attachment it is very limited. The vex will go down over a hundred feet and show you your jig and any fish from to to bottom of the water column. gl

Ummm, wrong board.
You should go to forum and look under equipment, loads of info in there and about 10 topics on this very same debate.

i have both and would take the vex and day. i rarely use the camera anymore. the vex is easy to use, my kid was using mine last year and knew what to look for. buy the vex.

Finger, I would also suggest going with a Vexilar first, you can always add the camera down the road. The cameras while nice to use are limited in their effectiveness. For some instructional videos that should help you with your flasher questions take a look at the Vexilar website. They have videos for every model they make.
btw....a Vexilar is not hard at all to figure out. I'd be willing to bet that after you watch the videos and take your flasher out on the ice for 10-15 minutes you will have it figured out.
Good luck with your decision

Flasher all the way. I had a camera for one season and carried it with me 2 times. What a pain in the butt it was for all the more benefit it gave me.

Im gonna go agaist the grain and say i'd rather have a camera, but not because it's better than a vex, because it suits my style of fishing. Vex's are very nice for deep jigging eye's but if you fish tip-up's and mainly jig for gil's and perch like I do then get the camera.
Camera's are nice for tip-up fishing because it allows you to veiw structure, weed beds, bait fish, ect.
Bluegil fishing- Camera's are nice because they bite so light. Plus Vex's don't work well in 5ft of water.
Perch fishing- Vex's arn't needed. If you can find a school, the perch will bite.
One reason many don't like camera's is because they don't buy a camera positioner (Marcum Makes one) so that they can position the cam to watch their bait.
Camera's can also be used in summer.
The major drawback is that they do not work well in low light/no light conditions or dirty water.
So, it depends on the type of fishing you like to do.

You're best off to get the flasher first. It will monitor the entire column of water. Later on you can add the camera which really broadens what you're viewing. The camera only sees what is directly in front of it and not what is above or below it.
No matter what you get keep in mind it will still be up to you to learn how to catch the fish. These tools can help you get better much faster though!

get the Vex. one of the best things about it is you can use it for what I call "Prospecting". If your like me, your time to fish is limited. I can waste time fishing a hole that has no fish. once you get used to the Vex you can just drop the 'ducer in the hole and see real quick if there are any fish there. No fish, new hole. when the fish seem to turn off, i just walk around with the Vex in my hand checking the holes I've already drilled till I find fish again. a lot less wasted time.
a buddy of mine busts my chops about spending so much money on it, but he's always asking me to check his holes for fish.
