Deep Water Gear
« on: Oct 19, 2007, 05:22 PM »
I'm probably going to get into fishing for deep water (> 150') trout and whitefish this year.  I'm leaning towards a couple of Thorne sticks and Abu Garcia bait casters loaded with one of the low-stretch superlines.  What suggestions can you guys with this kind of experience provide?  Also, what electronics are you using?  I'm currently running the FL-8SE which scales out to 120/40, I think (I'm CRSing right now).  Thanks in advance for your insight.

I do a little lake trout fishing every april.  I usually don't fish any deeper than 100', and I use an fl-8, and find it does the job, better than nothing, but I guess you'd want something with more range for deeper than 120'.

I have been using braided lines with spinning and baitcasters including an abu ambassadeur.  I always tie on a mono or florocarbon leader.  This year I think I will try one reel spooled up with just mono, as the smaller lakers really head shake and roll so I think the stretch in mono is benificial in this case, as I have lost more than afew to the violent shaking.   I have been using 28-32 inch medium, med-hvy, and heavy rods but would like to get one around 36" and med-heavy or heavy spooled up with some 20-30lb mono.

I have a few rods ready to go for lakers, salmon and pike.  I have a Thorne Bros Pro Plus with a 5500 C3, a custom 40" St Croix Avid Heavy with a older 5600 Ambassadeur (it was casting rod tip that I stuck a handle on), those are the two deep deep water rods.  I also use the original Genz Lightning Rods from Berkley (36" casting) and a Med Hvy 38" rod that I made.  I string up Power Pro 15 or 20 lb on some of them, while the other reels get 15 lb Trilene Big Game.  Most of the lakers come off of Lake Superior when I get the chance to hit the UP.

Sorry for the delay (I've been traveling a bit lately) but thanks for the responses guys.  C3's were what I was tracking on for reels.  I'm probably going to go with superline instead of mono to keep the stretch down...I hate stretch.  Again, thanks.

Powerpro rules, positive hooksets with no stretch, pair it up with a decent reel, a med,med-hvy rod and you're in business.
