my ice shelter project
« on: Feb 13, 2007, 05:52 PM »
Hi, I am new to this site and I really like what you guys have going here.  I've actually been looking at alot of threads and it is pretty cool.  I recently went ice fishing for the first time in my life, (I'm 17) and i don't know how i survived the last 16 years of my life now doing this sport!  Well now i really want to be able to go out by myself and i figured the first and most expensive thing i would need is the ice shelter.  I want a very small portable one and i figured i would try making my own.  I have thought of a unique idea to make this shelter very small when folded.  It will be small when set up (6x4x6 or so).  i want to make the floor and the 2 smaller side walls out of plywood, and the rest out of canvas.  The unique part about this is i want to cut each piece of plywood into two and hinge them together so i can just fold it up. I'm not sure if thats explaining it enough, think of it like this /\/\/\ when folding it up and then ||||||when completely folded.  I think with a little tweaking i can make this work out, It has to be small to fit into my car.  What do you guys think of this plan? Good/Bad?  Last i want to find pretty much the cheapest fabric that will keep the wind out, any ideas?  I saw ripstop nylon was only 5 bucks a yard and that is very doable, would this be a good material? Thanks and sorry for the long post.

CCJunior,

Good to see you're enjoying the sport. I personally think a big part of it is coming up with new projects to help you keep warm while you're out there.

I made my own shanty in a similar style of what you are describing. You can check it out here: http://home.cogeco.ca/~charrons/Default.htm. It is a little on the heavy side and this design takes two people to set it up. It does however fit in the trunk of my car (mostly) and has plenty of room for two adults.

I would honestly suggest you check out this project as well http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49644. It is a windbreak sled that is great for windy days when you have to move around to find the fish. It is easier to build and is excellent for going out by yourself. I made mine out of OSB and reinforded the corners but you could make it out of pine or something lighter. It fits in the backseat of a car and has plenty of room to store your minnows, heater, rods, etc. This year I got a Jet Sled Jr. and the box fits in the sled perfectly and it is a breeze to pull on the ice.

Good luck with your project. Post some pics when you git-r-done!

Hey thanks alot for the help, i really like that one that you recommended. I was thinkin and all i really want is something to keep me out of the wind and extreme cold because i have poor circulation in my hands so they will freeze after about 10 minutes with 60 gram thinsulate gloves on :-[.  That looks like just the right thing for me, i think you've given me a change of perspective on what I'm looking for.  I don't really plan on getting everything until next year but i want to get everything ready and i appreciate the help.

One of the first portable shelters that I made was like an open topped box(with two folding lids) with a curved front for towing behind a snow machine .On reaching a fishing spot the sled was unhooked, unloaded and stood up on it's end .After the top piece was unfolded, the two sides, each as wide as the box, were unfolded and held in place by the "roof". Visualize a rectangular cardboard box stood on end with the two sides and one end unfolded. A piece of plywood was placed on some cleats for a seat .A coleman lantern provided heat . On real cold days a blanket hung from the "roof" down to the ice. There was a jigging hole between my feet .
It was comfy but not roomy .

welcome to the site ccjr....  I'm new to the site myself..but can help ya out with the portable shanty plans.... i shearched this site for a year before building my 2 man...if ya go to the shanty plans & tips forum... you'll see my new one ..the hole hawg shanty...these folks have alot of great ideas....but the one thing i would stay away from if ya got to pull it ..old school like i do..is plywood sides...a plywood floor is good but all 4 sides with roof will kill ya in the weight dept. i used aluan ..much lighter & i used aluan on the roof with ice & water shield for roofing... if ya got a contractor friend have him save ya the material ..most guys like me... throw this stuff out at end of job... the hawg shanty is light (65 pounds) yet is hard side...i didn't make it to fold...i made it panelized with hole pockets in the floor for sides to slide in ...the size is 5 ft long...4ft wide..door side 6ft 4" high...back wall 5ft high.... fits right in back of truck stacked up...if ya interested in something like this or need help drop me a line...I'd draw ya the plans..but don't know how on this thing...but if ya pm me your address I'll send ya some plans with measurements...had a load of fun building this thing & its easier than it sounds...
