Fish egg/roe use
« on: Mar 05, 2004, 11:29 AM »
Greetings all,

Approaching the time of year when your keepers will likely have a belly full of eggs in them.

Anyone have any good experience on using the eggs/roe for bait or table fare?

For Bait or Chum:
What is the type of fish eggs/roe used, how do you process and/or use it and what do you catch?

For Table Fare:
What preparation and recipe/s do you use?

Thanks in advance,
-Reelcharacter
PM me to swap information on fishing holes or to go fish'in sometime in the Syracuse Central NY area (Onondaga and Madison county water holes in particular).

I caught some nice northerns this winter and some had a belly full of eggs.I wondered if they would work for steelhead bait because they look similar to sucker eggs.I asked a few friends who are avid steelie fishermen and the said they never heard of it.I cut the row into dime or nickel size pieces and put it on a #8 octopus hook(use a snell knot and pass the row inside the loop at the back of the hook and pull it tight). It worked.I caught a cople of nice steelhead on it,however the fish seemed to prefer trout row that day,but for the price I will keep some on hand because some day the steelies wont want the trout eggs and may key on these.still experimenting.Oh well ice is gone time to get a job.

I only use fish eggs for bait after I treat them for steelheading in the fall and spring.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an  well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, A fishing pole in one hand, beer in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming \"WOO HOO, what a ride!
