My Pak Sled Review....
« on: Feb 19, 2007, 09:49 PM »
So I finally bought one of these things, went to the local fishin' gear place and they gave it to me for $20 because they only had a few left which should have been a heads up. So I took this thing out and tried to use it and OMG what a pain in the ass. The set up which was supposed to be "easy" was not by any means, in order to get the sled to hold its shape I had to do all kinds of adjusting to the strings that were supposed to just be tightened up. The plastic ended up cracking and breaking on me when i tried to fold the little plastic lip over the edges of the sled that are meant to make it half rigid, not to mention the 10mins i spent trying to get the lip to fold over because the stupid thing would always kink in the middle so Id have to work the kink out from the middle to one of the ends.

Thanksfully it was ONLY -3C when I was fooling around with this "easy" set up if it was -15C I would have blew my top after I froze my junk off, the kicker for me was when the front kept coming apart and my gear kept falling out. Nothing makes you happier than having your flasher fall out of your sled.

Im sure it could be a great little sled but they have some serious bugs to work out and im my opinion stay clear until they do, for the $30 it is supposed to sell for Id rather go to Wal-Mart and buy a kids toboggan and some string over one of these things.  :-\
My wife told me that if I go ice fishing again she'll leave me. God, I'm going to miss her! :D

Thanks for the review Logan. I figured as much. If you want a sled to last a decade or more, get an Otter. It does weigh more, but is nearly indestructible. If you want to go lighter, the shappels are good too... or like you said... a kids plastic sled would probably be better and would only take up a little more room and be cheaper than the pak sled. Are the Jet Sleds any better?  Is there a difference in quality in the sizes?

Gotta agree on the Jet sleds, tough and I own three 2 smalls and a medium.  Great sled for the kids too, serves as a toboggan in a cinch...

Jet sleds or Otters   Just be sure to buy or make runners to protect your investment!
