I have been struggling with this question too. I am in college and my budget is tight. I see how they help people catch a lot of fish, but Usually I can do well enough to not justify buying one full price. However somedays when its slow you just wish you had one going down your hole. Ahh well.

I bought mine on ebay for like $190 about 3 years ago in the late summer/early fall.  Didn't even have to pay shipping charges, didn't realize it until auction had ended that the seller lived less than 3 blocks away from me.  Being in the middle of winter now and prime ice fishing time, I am not sure what kind of deals you can find on ebay, but if you wait I am sure there will be more listed on ebay after ice out, those needing money, and those who are upgrading are likely to sell theirs.  I guess the biggest question is do you want it now, or do you want it for next season.

I bought my Vex 3 years ago,and it was the single best ice fishing investment I have ever made.
Its not the cheapest one on the market, but I believe its the best,if you are a serious ice
fisherman and love to catch fish, its a must have.I have the FL-18 Dual-Beam,and would'nt ice
fish without it.Its nice to know if there are fish below your hole or not ????
And when the target turns RED,get ready .... FISH-ON !!!!!!!!!
Just my opinion ...........  Good Luck          jhc

I can borrow an auger,or use a tire iron to chip a hole, leave the bait at home, forget my gloves and bucket, leave the munchie bag on the table....
but i won't leave home or hit the ice with out my vex!!!!!!!!!!
I have an fl-8 and a fl-20 the 8 will work great for any situation compared to none. I use it in the summer too on my jon boat for walleye's  and on the bass rig for suspended fish.
the quality is there for YEARS of service. Not many complaints of units burning up or any thing. My fl-8 has been thru it all...submerged once.. its a good investment.

I spent lots of money on the FL-18 2 years ago, but was looking at the
long haul.

It's probably about $20 a year, or I can trade for an upgrade if I see the
need for more (better) features  I.E.  Flat Screen.

I love mine & it's paid big dividends on the amount of fish I mark &
pull out the ice.

P.S.  Lawrence is also a decent brand without the Vexilar price.

I will not go ice fishing without my Vexilar in hand!!!

A very good investment!!!

If you are concerned about price use it on your boat in the summer and it will pay for itself twice over!!!

Just look at Ron, Al, and James Lindner, you don't see any of their boats without a Vexilar on the console and bow!!!
A bad day fishing beats a good day working!!! <///><

Can't leave home without it.  Once I shorted out my battery on my coffee thermos on the way to the lake and I packed everything up and went out to by another battery, and back on the water in an hour and a half.

I don't think I have much confidence without it, don't waste much time fishing in holes that you don't mark fish in, spend more time catching than trying to figure out where you should be fishing.

Worth it?  For sure.

I have the FL-8 with the dual transducer.  Also use it in the summer on calm days looking for suspended fish too.

Check out Ebay they have lots of them... I use a Pirahna Portable right now and it works good for $145. But I will eventually upgrade to a vex also.

Let's put it this way... Once you fish with it(Vexilar) you probably won't fish without it.It will make your time on the ice so..so..much more enjoyable. My 6yr old son call's it video game fishing.

Check Ebay  as you can get some great deals. Some advice...If you buy an FL-8 than get the FL-8 SE and not the SLT. The SE has a much brighter display and faster motor speed.THIS WILL HELP YOU SEE THE SCREEN MUCH EASIER IN SUNLIGHT. All the FL-18's and new FL-12 and FL-20 models have the super bright display.  :)

Here's a good real time fishfinder - I have fl-8 and I have a Zercom just like this one.  Its almost as effective but you don't have the colors.  I think Zercom was bought out by another company- Hummingbird?

Bought an FL-8 about 13 yrs ago shortly after they came out, only time I don't use it ice fishin' is when I'm shallow water sight fishin'. If I recall it was about $200 or so back then, so that's less than $20/yr to make my fishing more productive. It's an invaluble tool for finding fish and determining their mood. Not to mention identifying bottom types, depth, and structure.

Rarely do things live up to the hype. But this one does. They have em on e-bay for 260.00 shipping included. Also, very durable . I'd rather fish with a stick and make a hole with a claw hammer than fish without one. But thats just me. Also it's spelled VEXILAR if you type it into e-bay. Good luck Paul

I don't know what I would do without mine. Like some of the others said, I use mine in my boat in the summer.

I have a Vexilar FL-8 and a FL-18. I also have a Si-tex FL-8. Can you catch fish without them? Yes....of course. But, a bobber won't tell you that fish are un-interested in your offering. Or, that your jigging is spooking the fish. I Cannot see fishing without one now having used one or the other for years. Here is a little tip....try searching for Si-tex, Hondex, or Micronar. They are the older versions of the Vex's. You can get them cheaper if you hunt for them. They use the same power hook up and transducer. If you are not concerned about color you can pick up a FL-5 for peanuts. Its all red display has good accuracy. Some of the older units have fish alarms as well. The older units are a little dimmer but you can easily fasion a sun shield from plastic or something. This might be a mid term fix before you move up. One thing for sure is that it will certainly teach you how fish react to different offerings. I love my older Si-tex and my son has now claimed it as his. I picked it up for $25.00 brand new at Dunhams several years ago. It was missing the ducer and power cord but Vexilar inc. fixed that for me.

You gotta have one! I'm comparing my pre-vex years (lots) to my post-vex years and I eat a lot more cold water delicious filets these days. Not only that, but it's a blast. It's like playing video games on ice.
I've had the original for about 6 years and it's still going strong winter and summer!
