$ Price Per Pound
« on: Jan 23, 2007, 06:16 AM »
After all of our investments in ice-fishing equipment, you know, augers, electronics, shacks, tents, rods, reels, tip-ups, lures, heaters, gas, bait, etc.: What do you think our catches cost us per pound?  :D Has anyone even tried to calculate it? Personally I don’t even have a clue but I would sure like to know everyone’s first guess at it just for fun. Of course the more you catch and the length of time you have been fishing will lower the price but nothing technical here, just a guesstimate. This should be interesting. Give it your best shot…
OK, who’s  first?

P.S. I don’t know the Canadian equivalents and other areas but maybe we will learn some conversion data.

LoL....I have thought about this a few times.......but I'm not sure I want to know the answer! If you ask my wife she'll tell you i don't catch anything anyways, so for me it's more like $ per ounce! LoL

It's about keeping my sanity not the money. A day breathing fresh air on the ice is priceless. Plus once you get the gear it lasts years. My tip ups are over 20 years old.

Considering how much I keep over a season hard and open water?!?

Probably $50/pound.

I fish mostly bass in the summer, keeping only a few walleyes, perch and crappie when I go after them.

Boat, gas, rods, tackle.  It all ads up.

But it doesn't matter.  The fun of it all is worth whatever I pay monetarily!

I throw everything back so the Price just keeps going up everytime I go to a bait or sporting goods stores.  I can safely say that I am above $2,000 per pound and counting.

With this crummy weather, it's going to have to be Price per Inch. Sunfish don't weight all that much.

My wife says that it is a good thing that my new shanty has a bunk in it so I have a place to sleep when she kicks me out of the house. No matter how hard I try, she doesn't kick me out.  :woot: >:D ;)2

Oh man...I don't go there...ever. If my wife kept track of the prices of all my hobbies and compared them to hers, I wouild owe her a godzillion dollars at the end of the year. She buys anything and everything she wants and I say nothing because I know the price of my toys and I also know the price of the stuff she buys. It isn't even close.

Whats that, you want a new washer and dryer.....? Which one...? How much...? No problem.... ;)2

Interesting question...it definitely decreases over time...I don't keep all that many fish, but it wouldn't surprise me that the last year or two come in at $100/lb.

Right now, the Canadian dollar is worth about 85 cents U.S., for what it's worth.

It's funny in a way...twenty years ago, I remember my father saying that venison was probably the most expensive meat out there, even though a license cost maybe $20 and shells were on the order of $1 each.  By the time you count the fuel, rifle, and everything else, considering deer don't have as much meat as a steer, it does get pretty pricey.

LoL, as I sit and read these replies I really can't hold back from laughing so loud that my wife had to check it out to. :roflmao: She stopped making the coffee and joined in and we both had a good laugh together. From the price per pound to price per ounce to price per inch and all the analogies in between, it just got to me. The worth of the posts from 1 thru 13 are humorous and really entertaining. Looks like the question in one form or another has entered all our minds, but the end result seems to be a unanimous,... it could matter less. It isss... worth it, and it just depends on how someone chooses to look at it. You guys have great humor and I thank you for your replies. Hope we get more. Now my sides hurt!

Thanks for that info Thriller, that means that you have to catch more fish to equal out, and that has to be a good reason to get out there more. THX

Not sure of the cost per pound, but one of my biggest fears is that when I die my wife will sell my ice equipment for what she thinks I paid for it.

I cant really put a price on the per pound thing but I can say this ... The enjoyment that I get out of sharing time with my kid's and a few friends is priceless so the per pound thing is really insignificant to me .

Now you know how you always hear how someone got a great deal on equipment at a garage sale or newspaper ad. ;D Wellll... I guess you can't complain if you planted those seeds! That really brings that $ price per lb. back up.

Agreed, and that is as it should be, joking about this stuff is just a way to justify our awareness of todays pleasures and the costs involved. But... we can run that $ price per pound down!!! Everybody get out there and fish every chance you get, catch more fish, and enjoy some good meals to boot!  ;)2

Your right, they should all be lumped into one universal $ Price per pound and once we agree on that, nobody can complain anymore about expenses. Thats what it cost, you knew that going in, and what can we bit** about next. I'll say $171.24 a pound. No diminishing returns and no taxes. ;)
