Kings through the ice?
« on: Jan 23, 2007, 04:56 PM »
Years ago I saw a show where they were fishing for King Salmon through the ice.  I was just wondering if this fishery still exists?  Would love to take a trip out there to do that. ;D

Well my freind, a lot of lakes in alaska have an landlocked version of king salmon but they aint what I think you are talking about.  Kings in Alaska run early in the summer and are all dead by the time the ice hits and the saltwater inlets in the southcentral and southeast, even southwest never freeze far enough out or solid enough to fish them like that.  Now, as for big silver salmon, sometimes, jsut sometimes, lakes and rivers will freeze while they are still running and you can get them through the ice.  The one year University lake froze over in Anchorage, all of us were landing 10-14 pound sea run silvers through the ice since they run up chester creek and through university lake.  I know when Kenai lake freezes, they get silvers through the ice and even the Tannana some years.  Silvers fight better than kings anyway.

My private lakes: Laurel, Gruber, Emerald complex (Mountaintop, E Emerald, W Emerald, Pine Tree, Deer, Lower Deer, Halfmoon, Hunter, Little Mountaintop), Leisure Lk, Leisure Pd, Monroe, Tego, Little Tego, Upper Spring, Pocono Summit, Blue Mountain.  I want Naomi, Paupacken, and Hallowood and I'll chase the dream called Pocono Lake

J- I can't believe you could ever say that Silvers fight better than Kings.

I think the name of the lake was Ohae I just can't remember if it was in North or South.  They weren't big  6-12 pounds but what a rush! ;D

They were fishing for Chinook or Kings through the ice of Lake Oahe which is above the Oahe dam at Pierre South Dakota. Tony Dean of Tony Dean Outdoors lives in Pierre and if You would google Tony Dean Outdoors and send him an email about ice fishing for kings, I'm sure he could give you all the info you would need. I know the salmon are coming back in Lake Oahe, but I don't know if they are still catching them through the ice. Tony will answer your questions. I email him fairly often.  [email protected]
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.
