yeah i was wondering the same thing about them i can't figure it out either.  It sure does spin some smooth and gently with hardly any resistence.  they are not like the polar tip-ups with the crank down top.  I hope someone informs us how to do this b/c i to am very interested in how to do it.

why would you want more tension RM?....if it freespools when tripped with little to no resistance, thats GOOD!!!...decreases you chance of an easy spitout from any size fish...any fish will unless it was extremely aggressive on the hit....Grump

If I remember correctly, there is a small rubber band that wraps around the shaft of the tipup just below the spool and the line guide.  If you move that up a bit, it will add a bit of tension to how easily the line guide moves, but not sure if that acutally puts tension on the spool.

What Grump said.  You want as minimal resistance as possible.  Generally, the bigger fish are not as aggressive as the smaller ones.  The reason behind that is a smaller fish sometimes get their meals robbed by larger fish, so they tend to grab and go quickly to clear the area and eat in peace.  The big boys (or rather girls) will just leisurely move off since the little ones won't bother them.

the thermal that are made by igloo have a rubber ban on the shaft simply press down the rubber ring on the reel shaft firmly against the line guide coail spring to prevent minnow from moving the line guide

I don't think you can adjust the tension either. I've got 5 of 'em so if it ever gets cold enough in the northeast for ice I'll break 'em out and take a look into it. Myabe you can modify them if you can't adjust them.

Like stated above, I do not see why you would want to increase the spool tension.

If you are concerned about large baits tripping the flag, there are two ( light and heavy ) settings on the trip bar, and a line clip near the spool for very large baits.

I think he's worried about backlash from a fast running fish. The frabills are not the smoothest tipup out there, so I don't think you'll have to worry about a serious backlash problem.

Ive fished 9-10" very lively creek chubs under mine and i think ive only had one false trip.  And ive never had a problem with backlash. The two i have are a probly my favorites out of all my arsenal

Yes that's what the rubber-type band is for...setting the tension. I agree you need a lite setting for an easy flag release...BUT I learn't a couple years ago on mine setting them up with heavy sardines for bait. For some strange reason (i've seen it happen a few times since then) after setting everything up..flag is down, and you lower it into the hole, and sure enough the line "guide" continues to spin around..releasing line, however not spinning the main rod,so the flag wouldn't even set off...even if there was a strike...and bait would probably have sunk to the bottom (kinda hard to explain what i mean)...but I've seen it happen, anyhoo that is when i'd slide the band down to the line "guide", and voila a little tension, and everything works fine.
I always check, and double check after lowering my tipup down to make sure everything is still working good. Having my vex now sure makes everthing a lot easier on checking where your bait is set at too!

I like resistance, drag whatever you want to call it especialy when using active or big bait on a tip up you have a good distance from you, there is nothing worse than runing 200 + yards and find out your bait triped the flag, that and every monster pike and lake trout I have ever caught scream line off the spool and almost have it emptied by the time I get to it.For these reasons I use Hiertage Lakers and Hardwater Explorer tip ups.

Thanks alot for all the tips. I figured out that if you push the handle and the spool together it also takes out the slack that they come with on the shaft and creates a slower spinning spool. Scott was Right. I am a little worried as I am going to a lake that has big pike.45" + abd wanted to be sure it wasnt going to backlash as I have 25 pound braid on it. Any suggestions on the line I should use.

i had a landlocked salmon last year backlask mine!!
but those things take off it a hurry!!!

I also saw one 2 years ago pull a polar tip-up so fast that the flag wouldn't come up he was going so quick it was just vibrating..  It eventually flipped up. I didn't think it was possible but about 5 guys heard it and saw it with me.. never did see the fish either he snapped it
