Mississippi Backwaters
« on: Jan 11, 2007, 08:10 AM »
Can anyone update me on the ice conditions around the Sabula,IA/Savanna,IL area?
I would think there might be some safe ice by Saturday at some of the backwater areas...like Barge,Millers,Mickelson's(near Thomson) or Sabula Lake.
Most Illinois sites are dead right now,so I thought some of you sturdy Iowa guys may help!
Thanks,
Mohawk Al

There is no ice and hour and a half north of there in Dubuque. I'd assume there is nothing in Sabula.

Iowa's great lakes have some ice but further South and there isn't hardly any yet. I checked with the Wisconsin crew just yesterday and there are reports of some ice in the Prairie Du Chen area in SW Wisconsin.

Sorry dude.

BTW, I've never fished Sabula. How is it?

Hey Mohawk,

I went out to Geneseco yesterday to check on the Hennipen Canal and it was around 1" thick.  The canal freezes up about the same time as the backwaters in Albany if that helps any.  Savanna is a bit north of there but I would guess with no rain and temps staying below 32 the next couple nights sat or sun might be in the making.
