HERE IT COMES (ICE)
« on: Dec 20, 2006, 07:29 PM »
Well by the looks of the weather for the central ADK's we will be walking on water before new years (Thank God).
And it's about time, but better late than never.
So all you ice junkies get ready to saddle up and travel light, and remember.... travel with a friend, or a total stranger, heck travel with your worst enemy if it will get you out and back safely!  ;)2

Check out the link below I think you may have to copy and paste, but thats it.
You should have NOAA or Accuweather on your favorites, it's a must.

Welcome to the capital region perch eyes,
If your looking towards plattsburgh the forecast is not so good for the next week.
You may want to take a peek around a little further south into the higher elevations.
What are you looking to fish for? You should be able to view New York Reports and Conditions by now. Open a county or lake choice it will give you a list of species in that body of water, and you can click on the lake or pond name for a view of the d.e.c map. If you can't view R&C try the DEC website on the link below.

http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/fish/lakemaps/

And Remember look at smaller lakes and ponds for early ice, take a partner and your ice picks.
Like to be more specific but again what are you looking to fish for?

Yesterday Accuweather long range forecast for the southern tier was for much colder starting on Dec.30th. This morning they changed that around to much of the same, well above average until at least Jan.3rd. Low 40's for highs and high 20's for lows.No ice to be made there. At this rate there will be no fishable ice in the southern tier until mid-Jan.at the earliest. So far in this area it is the 3rd warmest December since records have been kept. Also yesterday the National Arbor Foundation has come out with a new winter hardiness planting zone map.The last map came out in 1990. Thay changed the zone in my area (Hancock,Delaware County,NY ) from zone 5 to zone 6 ! Almost the whole country has had there zones moved northward ! The reason they give is warmer winter temps. from 1990 to 2006. I do a lot of saltwater fishing around Long Island.Today I got reports today that bluefish are still being caught along the south shore beaches ! Also loads of dolphins are around in the same areas. What the heck is going on ?

There's a lake not far from RT. 3, but about 20 mi west of Plattsburgh. It's called LOON lake. ( one of many called that) Its good for perch.
Fish the deep water and roam around 'til you find them.

Accuweather has been flip-flopping back and forth on low temps since early December. Sadly, when they flip back to moderate temp's they have been correct.

I read a science article about that big earth quake that caused the really bad tsunami 2 years ago. It actually tilted the earths axis by 1 minute of 1 degree. I remember asking myself if that would affect the weather patterns any. I think that might be the cause.

Global warming is happening and it sucks if you live in NY and like to icefish.  People can debate the causes, cyclical or environmental, but you CAN'T deny it's happening.  Fish and animals are moving northward out of their normal ranges and here we are without ice again and the prospects of not even being able to fish Lake George or Owasco or Otsego and many of the other lakes that are deep and take lots of cold to freeze :-\   I can't wait to see "next" winter if you can call it that.  We might not be icefishing at all or on a very few select lakes :-\   I just filled the gas tank on my boat and probably will be doing it a couple more times by February at this rate.
I agree with that 100%, Slip.  I went and saw "An Inconvenient Truth", and the proof is right there.  I don't want to hear the accusations that the reports in that documentary are just Liberal propoganda either...Some people say that the film was made just to promote Al Gore for a run at the 2008 Election.  ::)   The reality is that the information in that film is proof that global warming is real.  Is it too late for us to do anything about it in our lifetimes?  I don't know...but this warming trend is resulting in us not being able to do something that means sooooo much to me, and to all of you.  :'( To any non-believers out there, I urge you to see this film.  There's nothing we can really do right now, as individuals...but at least it will give you answers to all your questions.   :-\

What we all need to remember about global warming is the temp. is forcasted to raise about 3 degrees in the next hundred years.  That averages out to be a very small temperature increase each year and for that matter only a 1 degree raise over 33 years.  It will not be seen as what we are seeing right now.

What we are seeing now is just a period where for some reason or other the jet stream is keeping the cold weather from leaving the artic north and pushing down.  This is a similar pattern that happened the winter of 96-97.  That particular year I was living near Potsdam and couldn't get on the ice till January 8th and that ice was very sketch ice if my memery serves me.  No one seems to be remembering that the winter of 2003 was extremely cold and most lakes had well over 2 feet of ice on them here in upstate NY.  2004 and 2005 weren't much warmer either and we had good ice through the whole season.  I keep logs for each year and it is easy to go back and see ice thicknesses and patterns.

I am not arguing global warming.  I fear it is coming also I am just making the point it will not be something that is easily noticable within the first 10 to 20 years.
