Reviews on auger and shack
« on: Dec 01, 2006, 09:24 PM »
Well I couldnt wait for SW to get a Jiffy augers in, so I opted to buy an Eskimo Z51 Shark with the Viper 2.1hp in a 10" and let me tell you am I impressed.  This thing makes holes with no downward pressure applied, pull the trigger and let the weight of the unit do the work.  I drilled 6 holes today in seconds, this unit is far from under powered but it was its first outing!  So far very happy.  Next was the otter shack, I purchased the medium one, and compared to the Quickfish its night and day. Very well made and I have no complaints besides that I should of bought this one the first go around very nice shack.  I was fishing 28 mile pond which is close to my house, this was my first time there and did ok on small char and small pike.  More or less just testing out my new toys.  Next on my list is the Marcum 3 which will be here in 2 weeks, cant wait, Lake trout watch out!!!!  Will be fishing Quartz early tomorrow.

Like you, I couldn't wait on the Jiffys.  I bought a Barracuda 2 hp 8"---only cuz I'm a 5'3" girl and anything bigger woulda taken me for a ride!!  It sliced thru the ice like a champ and in a matter in minutes I had my rigs set up.

Good luck on Quartz and you can always try Birch or Harding on the way home. I'm stuck in town on-call for work this weekend, so it's the old honeydo list for me.

I still like my 1968 Easy Boy Auger.  It's heavy, ugly, old, cold-hearted...  hey- sounds alot like myself!!

But it turns heads and really cuts the ice!

I have an old strikemaster 2000. It seems to work really well. I havent had any problems with it yet and it only costed me 200 dollars new.

I have the lazer mag express 10" double blade. cuts fast and clean. also have an Eskimo lodge. snaps up in less than a minute and is 8' x 8'. the plastic bottom is the only draw back. it makes too much noise when you're moving around in it.

My toys for this year my flip-style Frabill

it is sturdy in the winds and with the addition of the legs that you can put ice picks in it hold s tight on the ice during the winds.  Big and roomy wiht the seats not covering up the sled, the seats are so comfortable you forget that your in an ace hut, the storage compartments that are inside the sled hold my poles and gas and extra equipmentcan't say enough good things about it.

My new Auger is a strikemaster 2000, cuts holse in seconds wiht oout any pressure from me, starts easy wiht the pressure relief button.  I just moved to the power auger used to drill by hand all winter, man my shoulders and forearms love power!

Icy, Your a young guy with an old man stuck inside ya!  I love it!!!  Man, that's the auger you were talking about with the shaft problem right?  A real conversation piece.

Smokin99,
No big char from 28 eh?  There's some whoppers in there for such a little gravel pit.  I have also heard problems with the Otters windows.  Crack, snapple, Pop!  You may have to replace them after you stick it out in -20 weather for a couple days....  Maybe they make a window treatment like Armour All?

Do you all think double or single blades for the power augers are best?  I see from the earlier posts it's about 50/50.  I'm hopping that Santa brings me a power auger this year, but would like to get the best bang for the buck, as he is short on cash for grown-up toys!
Any advice would be great, thanks

Icy Mike, Do you have to lift the "Easy Boy" bit up and out of the hole frequently while drilling in deep ice to keep the ice chips/snow from filling it up?  I don't think a blade like that would do a very good job of pushing the ice chips back up and out of the hole.  Just wondering...

FrozenMarc,
I'd say if your in Anchorage 2 blades are fine, unless your fishing any water with glacier silt!  That's were a singleblade auger is so nice for replacement and or sharpening...  I used the lazer (dual blade) and loved it, but own a single blade auger due to silty water.  Toss up eh!  Like AKdan said, a single blade will cut 5 ft. of ice without a problem.

Not really M-dog.  Although it is not shown in the picture, my auger actually has the "optional" spiral auger bit.  It's held in place with hose clamps and I have to replace the clamps a couple times each year because they break after a dozen or so days on the ice.  I've been thinking about trying it without the auger bit and using just the straight shaft.  However, all of the shavings would remain in the hole and would make cleaning out slush a bit more of a chore.

Barleydog,
Thanks for the intel, I just happened to have a friend who got a single blade for his birthday and we tried it out today.  Nice machine, worked great, but it's a lot different feel from my old Lazer hand crank, seemed to wobble around in the hole, but that's probalby just inexperiance with a new power toy.
And thanks to AKdan for his intel as well.  Hopefully I'll soon be with the rest of the gang with a power auger!
Tight lines!

I just got mine like I said; after years of a hand auger, power is by far less effort but it does increase your wieght if your pulling your own sled.  I don't know how I got along w/o a power auger after I drilled one hole.  Good luck getting yours!
