Which ice auger to get
« on: Nov 27, 2006, 09:39 PM »
Time for a new ice auger what do you guys use and like. 8" or 10", brand, HP.  I would like to get it this weekend so online ordering is out.  I do not want some under powered auger and I want one that will last. Seeing what you guys are happy with
Thanks for your help

Smokin,
I agree with Dan. Ditto on the 10" auger. Never know when you are gonna get the big one. Also more room for a camera or flasher unit. Talk to people quite often who
regret buying the the 8 and 9 inch. First auger I bought was an eight inch. Had to wait 20 years for it to wear out before I bought my 10". Jiffy is a very good brand. Have a great day..........Scott

The ones at SW are just fine.  I agree with Dan and Scott about the 10 inch.  I have had good luck dealing with Terry over at SW.  He will hook you up with one.

They all use the Tecumseh engines.  The only difference is the auger part and the paint job.

I like my Eskimo Baraccudaa plus 3hp, but wish it was a 10 inch and weighed less.

I have the Eskimo Barracuda 2 HP 8" with turbo cut blades. I would scratch the 8" with the turbo cut blades and go for the 10", I am very happy with it otherwise. If I heard correctly Eskimo is no longer making 3 Hp augers you can go to Ardisam/Eskimo and check them out. I really liked the Jiffy Dan has after using it a couple of times but the extra $150 was a little steep to commit for my first auger and I already had purchased mine.

I would first suggest checking the auger section or posting there by going here http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=73.0 Secondly doing tons of research and looking at your budget. It may be well worth spending the extra money if you have it or you can opt for one a little bit lower and have some money for some other fishing goodies. Best thing to look for is heavy duty, no plastic handles or linkage. Just good stought metal handles and linkage. Everyone knows what happens to plastic at -30, CRACK, SNAP :%$#!: :%$#!:

Just so you know, Rod's Saw shop is an authorized Tecumseh repair and warranty shop. I just had a free new engine put on mine because the cylinder was scored. They can't figure out why or how ??? Good thing I got it in while the warranty was still good. At least I have a whole new year on this engine ;D

Best of Luck, it is definitely not an easy decision to make.

Brad

how fast do powered augers acutally cut? I started at the same time as a guy across the way and i was through the ice well before he was. I think for the time being ill just keep my hang auger.

Sounds like the guy next to you had dull blades. Nothing wrong with a hand auger until the ice gets thicker. I've seen guys run out of auger before with both hand and power augers, nothing an extension won't cure though.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Jiffy and I plan on buying the 10" myself.  Last year I meet a fellow Ice fishermen at Birch by chance . When he came up to me and wanted to borrow my hand auger.  I said sure ,but asked whats up with he's power auger. He explained to me that his wife had just given it to him for a Christmas gift and this was his first trip out with it.  Long story short,  the plastic cracked like a saltine!  Brad right look for a Brand that has more metal parts then plastic......IE JIFFY!  Good Luck
