Orange County Baitshop w good bait
« on: Dec 11, 2022, 05:59 PM »
I typically jig fish. At times I set tip ups for kids in NJ. I use Garden State Bow and Reel. He’s honestly got the best/hardiest bait around. It lasts over a week in my garage with nothing, not even aerators,  done to it w no fish dying. Other places frustrate me with the garbage they sell.
I plan to try some new waters in NY this season. I’ll set some tip ups along w jigging to aid in learning the area. I don’t really want to do tricks keeping the bait  alive. I’d just go to Garden State and sweat nothing but I need the certification receipt for NYS. Another reason I just jig here. Anybody know of an Orange Co bait shop sells bait I don’t need to fret over?

Thank you buddy I appreciate it. I’m asking because I’d like to buy bait the night before and some places they don’t make the night. I know Davis sells bait and some guy in Chester but I don’t know anyone used any. Thank you again

O & H in Chester, usually open 6:00-6:00, just call ahead. Casey’s Kastaways in Port Jervis, used to be open 24-7. Believe they are open 6:00-8:00 now. I’d call to confirm. Not crazy about Davis’s shinners.. Think the water tanks are too warm, usually go belly up once you put’em in cold water.

Hey Walt. Not sure what are you assuming I do that? Chester is maybe 15 mins away. I live yards from Pine Island. The bigger lakes are 45 min or more so it matters not which way I go. I do fish some local small ponds but don’t pound anything and mostly take kids to them. If anyone sees me there’s suddenly 15 guys there every day for weeks and they think nothing of setting up within talking distance or closer, killing bass or tiny bluegills they’ll never eat anyhow.
I don’t archery or gun  hunt NJ with all the unsporting nonsense they do, don’t trout fish NJ, won’t even shoot 3D, and why would I climb in the same bathtub as the rest of them to fish so to speak, they’re very inconsiderate and consider the outdoors a group sport. Not that I’m anti social, I just want guys considering me as I them. Only thing I’ll ever do is trap and forage locally as NY too expensive for non resident trapping and not many forage. They’d rather eat processed, steroid junk though I do forage a bunch in Orange Co as well. The fellas in NY are much more courteous, it’s actually cheaper to hunt NY as a non resident than NJ as a resident, and the same driving distance or closer. I don’t do anything in NJ.
I might actually think the same of some  problematic NY guys right but I never once have an issue so if it’s fact there might be a jerk frequenting an area I haven’t run across him. Everyone is always considerate and a gentleman. If that wasn’t the case and I had to drive over an hour believe me I would.

I should add to show relativity Montecello according to Mapquest is under 50 mins from me so you’d be driving a bit longer. Real time I commonly beat Mapquest a bit I’m not unsafe but a little hot in the gas pedal. Excuse me forgot to add, Merry Christmas fellas

There is no reason you can't bring bait from N.J as long they are certified disease free, which they would be unless your bait shop catches them. Most live bait comes from Arkansas. What you need to have on you when your fishing is a receipt and something that states how many and what kind, like 2 dozen med shiners and the date you bought them which is good for 10 days. N.Y. state doesn't have an approved form so it's up to the bait shop. I've had some write the info on the back of their business card or the receipt and others have made their own form. I've been checked by the DEC twice both wanted to see my fishing license one asked if the bait was certified but didn't need to see my paperwork the other didn't ask.

Interesting, think you’ve solved my probs for me. I just called the shop, I pass it on way home and would get it night before. He said they do come from the place in Arkansas and are ceritified disease free. He said a receipt and card stapled to it is fine. Awesome thanks

Thanks again fellas. If I can get bait at Garden State I pass it on way home from work and it’s seemingly bulletproof. I plan to call dec this morn to verify any specifics so I don’t get pinched.

Not certain what is required in regards to certified bait fish receipts...most of the ones I have received were not much to look at at all. Some were hand written . NYDEC may clear that up ...I suggest Emailing them ..as you could save the response on your phone and you could also show you local bait shop that Email so they to will have a better understanding as to what NY needs on the receipt . But if/when you get the heads up from NYDEC please post here . My buddy lives in PA and is in a similar situation as you ..going to a NY bait shop is miles out of his way to fish NY waters.

Your local bait shop probably needs to apply for this application

https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/baitlicenseap.pdf

Docent look like much is needed on the receipts

https://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/125394.html

Selling Certified Baitfish
Certified Fish are tested and found to be free of specified diseases in accordance with the requirements outlined in the Fish Health Inspection Regulations - 6 NYCRR Part 188 (leaves DEC website). A general summary on the requirements for selling certified baitfish are provided below.

For both wholesale and retail purposes, a fish health certification report must be kept for all baitfish owned or held at the place of sale. Uncertified baitfish cannot be sold in the same facility with certified baitfish; otherwise, all fish will be considered uncertified.
Commercially harvested or raised baitfish that have been certified may be sold and transported overland.
When selling baitfish for wholesale, a copy of a sales receipt (containing the list of items below) AND a fish health certification report will need to be provided to the purchaser (retail establishment). See more about fish health certifications and approved testing facilities.

When selling baitfish for retail, only a copy of the sales receipt indicating the following must be provided to the customer

Seller's name
Date of sale
Species of fish
Number of each species sold
[/font]
Note: the receipt remains valid for 10 days from the date of retail sale, including the date of the sale. Once expired, the baitfish will be considered uncertified.
