Pike and pickerel in Keuka. I've caught both there. Not many pike there but they are good size when you do catch them. I'm sure neighboring Finger Lakes are the same.

There are also increasing populations of chain pickerel in the Eastern basin of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. In Region 7, the south end of Skaneateles Lake, the north end of Cayuga Lake, Madison Reservoir, Oneida Lake, Upper Little York Lake, and Tully Lake offer outstanding fishing for quality size pickerel. The Oneida Lake pickerel population appears to have increased significantly in recent years as aquatic weed beds have expanded and pickerel over 24 inches are often caught. It is also not uncommon for anglers to experience double-digit catches of large pickerel in just a few hours of fishing at Oneida. Some of the best pickerel fishing in Region 8 can be found at Hemlock and Canadice

Two May's ago I got the boat out for its initial run down. Went through my checklist with time to spare. There was only one rod left in the boat from the year before. So I worked the trolling motor and took some casts. 16 pickerel in a row.

Last summer,  different lake, a buddy and I were throwing tiny jigs for crappies. We moved 13 times and totalled 32 pickerel in an hour and a half.

None of these fish were over 20" and definitely over populated. I think the pickerel are saving themselves if you ask me.

There are a ton of pickerel in Loon Lake in Wayland.  I know a lot of the gill and perch fishermen hate them because they break off jigs.  But let me tell, it was a great place to take my kids when they were younger.  If you want to get kids hooked on ice fishing, catch a bunch of pickerel on tip-ups.  Always had a lot of action!

My son is a teen now, and the only kind of ice fishing he will do is tip-ups for pickerel, pike, and bass.

I don't keep much, just a few a year, mostly when the kids want to bring home their "prize".
But I always like eating pike and pickerel.  They get a bad rap because of the bones, but they are a tasty fish!

You may hate them but if the pickerel population collapses so does the rest of the fishery

Absolutely not true. Often times it’s the opposite. Once pickerel are introduced in a lake, they will decimate the fishery.

Best example of this is Kayuta Lake. Used to be a great trout and bass lake but a few years back, pickerel were illegally thrown in there. the lake is now a ghost of what it used to be. The Bass fishing sucks, the trout are non existent and the pickerel population is so abundant that they are stunted. Tube fish with the heads making up half the length of the body. It’s a shame what those fish have done to that lake.

We just caught 2 pickerel in Another lake up there and we never caught any in the years we’ve fished it. The locals are scrambling and wanting to work with the DEC to develop an action plan so it doesn’t ruin that fishery too.

Don’t get me wrong, pike and pickerel are fun to catch. I don’t purposely kill anything that I won’t eat. But to say they are the key to a well balanced fishery, even if they are illegally introduced, is just laughable. Leaving the pickerel unchecked will result in decline of the lakes quality.

Large pond I fish never had pike for a long time then they introduced them. 10 years later and they want every pike caught either kept or killed cause fishing for the other species has declined.

Delta res is absolutely loaded with pickerel as well. Go have at them and thin them out a bit lol. I fish it a handful or times every year seems like every year there is more pickerel and less pike/walleye. Might have absolutely nothing to do with each other or just might be my lack of fishing skills for the lake but I have to imagine the pickerel put a hurting on the overall food supply if nothing else. That said it is my first pick to bring someone new to ice fishing. Tons of flags tons of action. The kids love it

I once caught a pike and found a small crappie in its belly when I filleted it.
The thing that blew my mind was the crappie was still alive and flopping around!
He must have eaten it just before I caught him, but it still a few hours later when I filleted him up.
