building my own one man shanty
« on: Nov 12, 2021, 08:38 PM »
Good evening!  New to this forum.
I was wondering if any of you folks have ever put together your own one man shanty.  I figured I would use a jet sled as the base and have a tarp as the outer layer with some metal or pvc for the frame.  The only problem I have run into is what the hinges are for folding the frame up.  Any tips or help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Noah

Lots of good info here. Good luck.

This. Plus, go to your local sporting goods store that sell shanties. Look them over. Snap some pics. Go online to view a few of them. Put all of that info together and figure what works best for you.

I get wanting to build your own but with material costs these days it's probably cheaper to find a used unit one craigslist or a facebook swap site.

Going to be a daunting task ..even if you have a skill set worthy of the task ..You should add your location ..state and county to your profile ..may be a deal in your area..or at least a retailer to help with purchase or measurements .

If you look at the original Fish traps made by Dave Genz, you can see that these things are pretty basic. The hoops are conduit and the hinges are made with bolts and a piece of sheet metal with holes. You can easily build one, but you will not save any money, unless you can build it out of parts you have.
If you just enjoy tinkering, go look at the models in the store, or find the Dave Genz documentary on YouTube and study the old version fish traps.
