I haven’t been out since the snow but it can’t be good.  The weight of the snow will force the ice to go under water. What little Ice we have will not survive.  To warm.  IMO
The only time I learn something is when I'm not talking.

Yeah...really bad timing on this snowfall. I was reading some blogs from the Midwest. Their biggest worry early on is snow insulating the ice from cold temps. By trapping air the snow slows or prevents more ice from forming.
Back to spudding as you go I believe.  :-\

I'm in central IL, and we got about 9" of snow that fell onto mediocre 1-4" ice. Pushed water up through it, then it was 35° and sunny yesterday and it basically all melted off and opened most of the ice back up to open water.

That was kind of a bullet dodged, because it will freeze back up a lot better now than it would have with a bunch of snow sitting on top of wet, slushy ice when the cold front moves in on Friday.

I’m not sure if anyone has done some spot checking on some of the waters in the state but I did today. Remember this storm had a lot of wind with it so there were places that had the wind blow a lot of the snow off of the top. I checked a few places that I know had good ice over the weekend and it seems like the ice held up, there are some cracks with water coming through but all in all I don’t think too much damage was done. I’m sure there are some exceptions but for the most part if you had good fishable ice I think it held up in many cases, but it needs to get colder again for it to sustain.

Thanks for sharing Moose. I will do the same if I'm able to check anywhere before the weekend.

I checked 3 spots in ESE CT today and didn’t find any damage.  There were a few people fishing the main lake on Pachaug.  Also saw people on a few other spots in the area.  What I walked on was solid and surprising not slushy. Whatever water came through froze up overnight making a really nice carpet to fish/stand on.  No wet feet where I was!

Got out today and fished most of the day, was the same spot I was at before the storm on Sunday and I had about 6” of ice. Today I had about 5” of shush on top of 8” of solid ice, so looks like things held up well, just watch the edges and hope Sunday’s storm misses us.
