Mr big buddy problems
« on: Dec 30, 2020, 01:56 PM »
Hi guys. I am trying to figure out a problem I am having with my Mr.Big buddy heater.

I believe it is a bad regulator.

I am using a 20lb tank. No filter but have the approved plastiselasticizer free hose approved by me.heater.

The heater has done this since new and has not been used much. Purchased 10 months ago. It has only ever had the approved hose connected.

The heater generally runs fine for an hour or 2 then I have to let it rest. The pilot keeps going out. The flame however does not peter out. It gets larger and appears to be blowing itself out. If I let the heater rest for a couple hours it will run fine again.

I changed my hose to the other regulator and it fired up nicely and ran fine. I have not needed to run it for prolonged time on the opposite side to confirm this actually resolved the problem long term.

Any other ideas?

Had this exact thing happen on my regular buddy heater a few weeks ago. I used a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol to clean the gas orifice and now it works fine.
The man banging on the door yelled "Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms"... I just assumed it was more supplies.

I used an air compressor with a small end on the hose, blow out the orifice  and surrounding areas.should fix the issue

Can you be more specific? The pilot light area?

I am assuming the thermocouple as well as inside the pilot hole?

There are a number of YouTube videos on “how to clean a Big Buddy heater”, including a couple by the company. Just do a search on YouYube.

This is a common problem with running those off a bigger tank......the additives in the propane clog up the heater.......get yourself an inline filter for the hose. You can get it on Misterheater.com.  Good luck and Happy New Year

How big of a tent/ room are you running this in? If it's a smaller space you may be burning up the oxygen in the area causing the pilot to go out. Introduce more oxygen into the space when it's on and see if it resolves the issue. Otherwise it could be a pilot line/ thermo coupler issue for sure

After cleaning it properly ...  Disconect the hose from the tank and reconnect then try turning the propane tank on slowly and see it that works better .

I always turn the tank on slow. The pilot does not stay lit if I turn it on fast. It is a different shut off. Turning the gas on fast you can tell it is being chocked gas and fit burns out.

The problem I am having is more in line with pressure being too high. My pilot flame remains sharp but is closer to 2 iches in length then grows beyond that as it starts blowing out

If there wasn't enough oxygen to run the pilot, there'd be more than THAT that went out. I'd say look at a line condensation prob, as it happens after running for a period. That will fudge up the orfice and regulator, and do exactly what is happening, hence using a filter. Guess I'd give that a whirl first...good luck!

I have run my big buddy off a 20lber for about 7 years with no filter, every season or 2 i stick clean the pilot office with a healthy shot of carb cleaner. Give your heater a bit of time before you start it after tho. Heater still works like a charm.

I see Mr Heater and people say you need a filter to trap impurities in the rubber hose. I have heard people including the company say use a good hose and no filter needed. So that what I did. I have a 10 year old regular portable Buddy and have always used large tanks with Mr Heater or Coleman hoses and never once used a filter. I have never cleaned it.  It runs awesome unless it is below zero degrees F.

Now it's the additives to the propane? I don't see it...
