« on: Mar 15, 2006, 09:40 PM »

It may have been moved to "Ice Fishing Tips - Eelpout", which is what they're called south of here.  Check about 3/4 of the way down the first page for cleaning instructions.

Thanks Skiff-That's not it but,I enjoyed reading that thread.Maybe someday I can bring myself to prepare one of them-I'd really like to taste some cooked burbot first....might give me the courage I need to skin & fillet one.
I have caught quite a few of them and always put them back....but a lot of guys just leave them on the ice around here  :( I just don't believe in shooting something I'm not going to eat(except for gophers or varmints) or keeping fish I'm not going to eat.
Last year about this time I caught the biggest one I've ever seen-barely fit through my 8in hole and wouldn't you know it,didn't have my camera, tape measure, or scale with me....must have taken me about 10 min. to land it on light line. First I thought it was a Walleye then as it ran I thought it was pike-I was surprised as it came to the hole...just wasn't expecting that.
Anyways, thanks for the help,Still don't know if I was dream'n or what...my wife tells me 'I just don't pay attention'.

had 6 new members to the Kiss a Nessie club during the fishathon for cancercare at Gimli march 3-4th.....6 of them were younger anglers that always threw them on the ice like their elders always did.....suprisingly, when I asked them to keep any burbot that they caught during the first part of the fishathon, they obligingly said yes....and were the first to appear in the lineup for a taste at 3:30 am.....and the first to appear for seconds after devouring their very first taste of one of the finest eating freshwater fish we have....ask anyone who's ever tried it after all the foolish reasons we come up with (including slimy...ugly....snakey ....disgusting....and any other description).....and I'd be the most suprised one here if anyone wouldn't keep them to eat...feast and enjoy....Grump   Get over Ugly.....and Enjoy

I made it out for Thur evening/Fri morning and didn't catch anything but it was nice out anyway.  Take a look in the tackle shop for skinning pliers... they have curved jaws and ergonomic handles that don't slip off the skin when you're pulling.  They use them in the states a lot for skinning bullheads and they're great for cleaning burbot.  My neighbor brought mine from Texas but I'm sure I saw them here somewhere.
The problem with quotes on the internet is that they're difficult to prove.

cooking pout is well worth the effort, even though, people leave them lay all over the ice on mille lacs. The Indians on the res know better, they will ask for them if they see them going to waste. People just cant get over their appearance I guess.

maybe the post contained something inapropriate and was removed?
I don't think the original post did ....and if it was a reply, usually just the  reply gets removed.
I'm starting to think it was the thread that holmes76 mentioned but I must have gotten mixed up and just thought it was on the Sask. forum(old age,I guess)  ;)

PGKris likes to fish on Crooked River ;D ;D ;D Stay away from there. Cluculz is good on south shore. Tacheeda has 27 inches of solid with some 3 inces of slush on top.
I've been breaking thru the last 6 weeks but that was just the crust above the 8 inches of water in places. You have to build up your hole with snow to stand on. Best fishing to be had right now. Unfortunately I'm busy on my house so unable to capitalize. Just going by what my buddies are telling me 8)

Check with him, he knows the burbot lake us guys like to go too. Lots of ice still there ;D

Guys,

I just have to say that Burbot is probably the best tasting fish I have ever put in my mouth.  If you like cod you will definately like burbot.  The meat might have some dark color in it and some veins running through it but it sure is flaky.  Just boil some water and drop some chunks of meat in there and boil it until it starts floating, then dip it in some garlic butter.  Makes a great tasty treat.

Fishing is not about life or death, it is much more important than that! And all I have to say is FISH ON baby.
