stand or kneel
« on: Mar 01, 2019, 07:51 AM »
after watching some video's of guys hand lining a fish on the ice, i noticed alot of guy's kneeling, I will always be standing because it gives me  a advantage when pulling line. wondering what you guy's think and what you prefer and why?

Stand.  I feel like you have better line control and can spread out the line a little more to help avoid any tangles.

That.... and my knees are shot so standing back up from a kneeling position isn’t always that graceful especially on slick ice.

Younger days I kneeled.    I stand now.   Much easier to guided a biggie up the hole while kneeling.

Kneeling does hurt and make standing back up a little difficult for me, I'm 70yrs old. However standing hurts my back more than kneeling hurts my knees, so I kneel if I can't sit.
It's more important to be nice, than it is nice to be important.

I always stand. It seems little awkward kneeling trying to land a fish. Just my 2cents.
Also you can move around the hole easier to block the wind if it's blowing in different directions.

Stand? Kneel?  Why not just sit on a camp chair???

Here is my 2 cents.

Standing gives you the advantage of pulling in more line in each sweep yet still allows you to get down to the hole fast if need be. The biggest advantage of pulling a fish in while kneeling is if you do it during a windy day. While standing your line will be going everywhere, around your boots, spikes, tip up, etc and then untangling is a pain. Yes, that has nothing to do with landing the actual fish but it does slow you down if you are on a school of fish and want to get that bait back down. Standing also allows you to move around the hole to control the angle of your fishing line. If you are on your knees close to the hole you are typically pulling the fishing line up as high as you can (over your head) with each hand which also allows some split seconds of loose line and gives the fish a chance to spit the hook, where as standing you can reach towards the hole for the line and pull towards your chest while bent over and have total control. In my books, I always stand unless the wind is an issue and even then if its a BIG fish, I deal with the line afterwords.
Just add water.

During the initial flag, I kneel,.I want to see what direction the line is going, I want to gently place my tip.up out of the way I want to.let the line run across my UN GLOVED fingers so I can feel the bite, once I set the hook I get on my feet, to fight the fish.

Joe. Great point that I forgot to mention. If you are wearing gloves, you are already at a disadvantage.

I go with a mix. One knee down initially to be able to bend down and see what the lines doing. If it's a hook up i generally stand up unless it's a small fish. Generally lose the gloves unless it's cold. Theres plenty of other things the line can catch on besides gloves, ice, boots, spikes or zippers on suit, even the buttons on the cuffs of your flannel or the velcro around the wrist on a jacket. Being comfortable while fighting a fish is a big advantage so do whatever it takes to be in your comfort zone

Don't forget the wind and the potential of your line freezing to the ice...It's best to be ready for anything!

Usually kneel - but tend to stand when fighting a potential good fish as it does give you more ability to play the line/fish...

Stand. I like the mobility factor especially if a fish pulls a hard turn I can shift my legs and dance around the hole to keep tension. Back when they used to put the broodstock salmon in I would lose a lot of the fish during the run when the fish took a hard turn until an old timer told me to move with the fish as in shifting my legs in the direction of the fish to keep the line taut and keeping an athletic stance. My catch rate went up.

Someone mentioned line freezing to the ice... that’s usually not a factor for me but a few weeks ago I hooked a big brown and it went on two long runs. Because I was standing I was able to feed line through my left hand while unsticking it from the ice with my right hand. I was using a light leader and don’t think I would’ve landed it if I hadn’t been standing.

I’ve also started moving around the hole more while playing fish so they aren’t going under me at the hole.. feel like I have much better contact that way.

I thought this was gonna more geared towards jigging, I see tons of people kneeling on the ice/snow that stuff is cold and hard AF...

I stand most of the time, but when I do kneel I bring a row boat seat-pad flotation device to kneel on, the padding is great.
