Who likes their Lazers?
« on: Jan 02, 2006, 09:29 PM »
Anyone with a Lazer auger, please state your likes and dislikes if any. How long you have owned one, how long the blades last, etc. I have had a six inch for 6 years and it still has its original set of blades. I have found it cuts a half inch per turn.

I like my Lazer 8 inch, cuts well, but doesn't stand up to my Nils. Decent auger though, still cuts after about 5 years of hard use.

Ted, If your looking for an auger to buy I would personally go with the lazer for one its not as costly as the nils as for durability I dont know I dont own a nils but the my lazer is holding up strong  . But I can tell you that if you bang around any auger on the ice its not going to cut right . The Mora are inexpensive and are fine as long as you dont mind spending some time and effort drilling holes . For the price I would go with the lazer , but if you have cash to blow then try the nils form what i heard they cut the best ,but the lazer works just fine for me . hope this helps

Lazers are excellent. They are lightweight, cut fast, re-open old holes, blades stay sharp a long time as long as you don't hog your way through the ice. Right now I can't afford powered augers so these are my choice.

I really like my lazer.  I like it even more now that I have put new blades on it after 3 seasons, cuts awesome.

We have 3 lazers, two 6'' and one 8". The 8'' is about twice the effort to turn as the 6" they all cut well. I fish 3-4 days a week, so I change my blades every other year wether they need it or not. I would like to try a nil's but after hearing about how sensative the cutting head can be, I don't know if I would lay the cash out. On another note my freind has a 5" lazer and it's almost twice as easy to turn as the 6" Overall I have been very happy with the lazers.

The only knock I had about my lazer was that after 2 years the handle broke through the top. Cheap fix though, so no worries. It still takes forever to drill through 2 ft of ice by hand, regardless of which weapon you use.

in new york on an area called fair haven park pond. its on the shore of lake ontario and is separated from the lake by a narrow sandy beach with a road going through it. the way the wind blows, when the ice forms it can get quite a bit of sand in the ice. im not sure if that makes sence  ??? ??? ???

Billybono - I know what you mean about Sandy Ice.  We have a spot on a small pond near home that is next to a dirt road.  The road dust swirls and lands on the end of the pond.  It's like sandpaper out there.  I wouldn't even think about trying to drill in it...

I LOVE my Lazer 8" auger.  I finally had to change the blades on it after 7 or 8 years.  It cut like a caped ape until I loaned it to someone.  After I got it back, all it did was skitter around on the ice and sort of scrape a hole.  After numerous attempts to sharpen it with one of the Strikemaster-vended gadgets, and tighten the blades back down, it still skittered around like crazy.  A set of new blades and it's a new beast.  Now where is that ape ???

a pet could fall down a10 inch hole and that brand is a bit on the cheaply made side

Cheaply Made??  When I purchased it, she was the most expensive auger on the market, cut faster than anything else out there, and had the same 3 hp motor that every other auger has.  I'm still on the original set of blades and I've dogged that auger hard every weekend there's ice around here, not to mention that I usually drill not only for myself, but usually a few others as well.  Have sharpened the blades once in almost 9 years, and this year I finally have to sharpen them again.  Now..whats cheaply made about them??  The powerhead is the saem as every other 3 hp, the steel in the auger is the same and probably comes from the saem plant as the rest of the brands out there and the blades for being a shaving type instead of the chipper type blades hold an edge as long or longer than any other type I'm aware of...so please elaborate....thanks,pete,,,oh, I mean big f...Esox

its mostly the tecumseh engines they are not made as well as most they got a bad rap when they stuck them on those mini roto-tillers and they didnt last long overheated but that was with anything tecumseh in the 80s and so on and from what i know they still make the same quality but in comparison to any outher engine they are mostly used for there pricing and thats a big seller when were talking in therm of making more money ;D

Well, with that comment above...and the one I've pasted below you've got me real confused:

>>a pet could fall down a10 inch hole and that brand is a bit on the cheaply made side>>  (Referring to the Strikemaster brand auger)

Jiffy, Eskimo and Strikemaster all offer the 3 hp Tecumseh powerhead....so are you saying every one of those brands are all cheaply made due to the use of the Tecumseh??  You did say it was due to the Tecumseh engines in your quote...I think you might have a hard time making anyone believe that comment you made on this post, especially since you just trashed the biggest names in the auger business for the past what, 40 years or so??  (Especially Jiffy)

Power augers.....I laugh. The guy next to me thought it was just as funny when I drilled a hole faster than him with an "old blue" 7" hand auger when he was popping holes with his power auger. Well, I don't know if he was smiling cause he thought it was funny or cause I made him look silly.....now I'll just let it go.

You drilled "a" hole faster than him......now try drilling 5 holes faster than the gas auger.

""You drilled "a" hole faster than him......now try drilling 5 holes faster than the gas auger.""

I tell you what, if you gave me a 6" Lazer with sharp blades, I bet it'd be a real close race.
