Nils Prices Go Up?
« on: Nov 09, 2018, 07:08 AM »
Looking at Cabelas and Marine General, have the Nils prices gone up everywhere?  Was looking at getting a backup 8" cutting head, and I think they were $99 last year.  Cabelas and Marine General both have them at $150.  The full-size 8" auger is also up to $249.

FishUSA has the 8" head for $129, but that's still higher than last year, right?  Or am I making up last years prices in my head?  ???

I noticed they increased on Cabelas as well. I got the 8" Nils last year for $190 and spare cutting head for $99 I believe

Nils is pricing themselves out of the market, possibly an increase to recover last year’s warranty losses.  A bunch of augers and adapters were returned last year due to faulty or missing welds.

I've been kind of watching hoping for a deal to get another 6 inch head as a backup but the prices went up that much maybe I'll be listening this for sale and just going with the Nero.

They've gone up...just a few years ago I got my 8in nils shipped to my house from Cabelas for $125 on sale. Then I was lucky and bought a used power point cutting head from a guy for $40 on Craigslist. He had won a new Ion in a raffle and was selling his gas nils since he had gotten a new wheel house. Lucky me. I've never seen a nils on Craigslist since. I like my nils and haven't had to send either of my cutting heads to frank for sharpening yet. I do like the fact that the cutting head can be adjusted or fixed if it gets bent......where on any other auger you'd have to junk it.

I have also debated selling it since nils prices are so crazy and have been going up......however I do love the power point cutting head since it has the guide point when drilling holes in the wheel house.

I see the brightest future in the composite augers like the pistol bit, kdrill and maybe even the lazer synthetic.  The long term reliability and stability should be far better with those.

Prices should come down also.....it will be interesting to see how the pistol does this year. The kdrill had a cast head the blades mount on, but the pistol looked like a plastic composite for the blade mount.

The prices this year on them are pretty ridiculous for sure. I did good last year getting my 8in convertible delivered from cabela's for $160 ($20 of $100 coupon, raise gift cards & free shipping) and now most my fishing friends want one but not for $250-$260. Their warranty issues last year are definitely playing in this price increase im sure. Not good for them as there's so many new drill augers out this year

I believe Agronomist hit the nail on the head. I don't understand why the auger makers are so worried about making more gas/propane augers? Yes they have there applications but who needs 2-3 different models. I hardly see anyone use a gas auger anymore. Most are going gasless. Look at Mora augers they are sold out like hot cakes now. Before it was the only thing on the shelf. Why not make something just like the Mora in a synthetic of some sort? to make it lighter perhaps. Glad I no longer have my old Nils with these prices I can buy a lot of Moras for that. Just my thoughts. Will Jiffy ever wake up ;D $500 bucks for a electric drill no thanks but you can buy a 30 # auger gas that is? Have the manufacturers looked on sale sites. Hardly used Gas auger selling for electric auger new last year new $500 sell for $200 good luck. I will get of my box now just drives me nuts give the customer what they want.

They did...the $40 mora hand auger in a synthetic is a $180 Eskimo pistol....

What actually interests me is the new HT Premium E-Drill auger.

It looks like a composite flighting, Lazer styled Curved blades, and a center point.

I'd love to look at one. If it is quality, I'd get one.

Ok, I guess I’m still a newb at this, what does the center point achieve? Will it allow a lazer style auger to reopen or overlap holes?

Most people.......even most the people that sell augers don't know what a center point achieves....I didn't either until I got one and used it.

What the center point achieves is it keeps the auger from walking when you go to drill/start a hole. It allows for perfect centering of the hole since the auger won't walk before starting.  An example of where a center point is very useful is in a wheel house when you want to center cutting an ice hole in the center of the fish hole.

Nils prices did go up. Just got a replacement head as a spare from fishusa.com, they were $105 last season, up to $125 this year for the 8 inch head. Free shipping in the USA. I love the Nils, but I drilled into a shallow sand shoal late last season, rendered the cutting head useless. Had to send it to get sharpened, tried doing it myself, but no luck. Now I havea spare head if ever that happens again.
