Cabelas Visa
« on: Jan 19, 2018, 11:26 AM »
Anyone else have one? I just signed up for one the other day and got approved. Still waiting on my card and CL. Just curious how the rewards system is. I dont plan on carrying a balance month to month, but i do plan on using it for fishing trips and fishing purchases.

I have one and use it a lot.  The basic rewards for purchases not at Cabela's is only 1%, so you can get higher-paying reward cards.  If you get up to the higher levels (Silver, Black), the in-store bonus grows.  For Black, I think it's 5% in points for Cabela's purchases.

Make sure you pay it off, or the interest and fees will eat up your rewards fast!

On the bright side, my wife has no interest in how the rewards $ are spent.   ;D

I have had a Cabelas card for about 15 years. It is great as long as you pay it off each month. It is like getting free gear and if you plan it right you can hit a free shipping time too.

Well thats always a plus for you. My wife is the same way, she could care less about anything in Cabelas

With ALL credit cards, read the fine print.

Introductory offers always seem great until you read about what happens if you miss a payment or are late (by THEIR standards)....

That's when you find out how they can offer such a great starting rate.

The "low" interest rate can last up to 1 year, then it jumps up to x% plus prime rate (so it'll be around 14-16%).

I had one credit card off from BOA that had wording regarding the increase in interest rate after a missed/late payment.

One late/missed payment would bump it up to 25% "FOR THE LIFE OF THE CARD".
That means you screw up once, your interest rate would NEVER be lowered.

That's why I only have one card for emergencies, and I overpay my balance so that I can have a credit balance for the next month.

There was a point earlier on (years ago) when I first started overpaying my credit card bill, that if I had a credit balance for more than one month the credit card company would send me a check for the credit balance. They do that so that they won't have to pay me interest for the excess money I paid.

Although it's not a lot of money, I love being able to legally stick it to them as often as possible.

I've had a Cabela's card for a long time.  It is just like any other credit card, as long as you keep it payed off.  We have it setup for "autopay" so we don't have worry about missing a payment.  As someone else said, the thing I like most about it is that all of the $ earned are mine.  You can earn more on some cash-back cards, but then my wife would stick that money "in the vault" and I'd never see it again!

Oh, I didn't say that!  I get to spend the points but she is DANGEROUS in the Women's wear section (some of that pink camo stuff is cool) and look out if she gets near the grandbaby clothing!

Do you pay the card  off immediately after purchase, or when bill comes?

Don't do it! I've had a cabelas card for about 7 years. The rewards are neat with 1% back, but not the best. I debated for about 6 months to jump ship with the card. I now have a citi mastercard rewards that pays 2% on alllllllll purchases. I keep my cabelas card since its a visa in case someone doesn't take master card.
So you will make double the money on purchases with a citi card compared to cabelas. So for every $100 you would get back with cabelas you would instead get $200 with citi. And cabelas is super expensive so why buy from them except for the fact that it is cabelas? I usually buy 99% of my stuff off amazon or some other website because you can get it cheaper 99% of the time.
If you travel a lot then get a travel rewards card. I researched for about a month and love my card. I've had it for about 5 months and have about $150 dollars. If I had been using my cabelas card I would only have $75 that I could ONLY spend at cabelas.
With the citi card there are tons of ways to spend your money and no cap and no time frame to spend it. I'm saving for a new gun I think so in 3-4 years I will get a new gun. With cabelas it would take 6-8 years to save the same amount. just my $.02 is that you are leaving free money on the table.

There are a few credit cards out there that offer 1.5% back and give you a signing bonus and give you an automatic $100-250 just for getting the card. I looked into those because the instant $$$ would be nice, but in the long run 2% back for a lifetime outweights 1.5% over your lifetime by thousands of dollars. I went through my budget and figured in about 8 years the 2% card would eventually start making me more money and overcome the difference with the signing bonus. So if you are going to keep a credit card for longer than a few years go with a higher percentage back. Also just my $.02

Oh and I pay mine off the second it shows up on my online account. I don't wait till the end of the month. But I know a lot of people pay it off once each month rather than a few times during the month. That is a personal preference.

I've had a Cabela's Club Visa since the early 90's.   It's now just a back-up as I have everything I need, ha.  Several real plus points ~ if it says Cabela's on it, the warranty is lifetime, just return the item WITH YOUR RECEIPT for a replacement item.  Buying it once is great. At times, special sales come with quadruple points. It's usually a treat to visit if for no other reason but to ogle the museum items.      ;)2

If you have Amazon Prime, I recommend their Rewards Visa. You get 1, 2 or 3% back depending on where you make your purchases. I typically redeem my points for BassPro or Cabelas gift cards on Amazon.

Helped my daughter out by buying her a washer and dryer on my card. She paid me right back and I paid it off in about a week. I earned about $35 in points on that purchase.

You can pay online any time that's why I like it easy and no waiting until the bill comes.
