The aqua view is a pain to use in choppy water. Really nice on a calm day. It doesn't work well unless you are fishing very clear waters.

So iceman what model did you get and what are your plans for it?  Mainly ice fishing or summer use?  I use mine mainly ice fishing there best then cause the lakes aren't all stirred up from boat traffic. I put 3 holes in my fish house and put the aqua-vu in the middle aimed at the hole I am fishing from. The other hole is my dead stick hole. Love watching those fish come in and bite right in front of the camera.  They save allot of time when your trying to just locate fish to catch. Drill a hole drop the camera, no fish, move on.  You'll like using it, I tend to grab it more than the sonar now. Sonars are great but they don't tell you why that fish just came up to your bait, looked it over and swam the other way.  With the camera you can see exactly what makes them want to bite it.  Or what you can do that will trigger them too.   Craig

I have been using mine for 3 years now.  I rarely find an opportunity to use it in the Summer because unless the water is perfectly still, it's hard to find your target.   However, in the winter It's awesome.  I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I drill 4 holes and put it in the farthest one aimed towards the other three.  It generally will pick up the other three lures just fine unless the water is super muddy.  Also, once it starts getting dark they lose their ability to show a picture.  I have tried using the lights on mine, but the lights are so bright that the fish tend to be afraid of them.     You will enjoy losing very few fish to missed hooksets anymore.

How do you guys keep the camera pointing the correct direction? I saw a tripod base at the boat show and might have to buy one this year unless you have any better (and cheaper) ideas.

I bought the Scout XL and i have been playing around my house with it.  I will mainly use it for ice fishing but i might take it up to our new cabin in Mich. and see what there is out there.  I was thinking about buying a tripod for those does anyone know about those and it is worth the extra couple dollars to get the motorized one?

I do not use a tripod but can see how it would be handy.  Getting the camera pointed in the right direction does cause trouble sometimes.  Once it faces the right way, it seems to stay there fine.  I curl the cable by hand until it gets to the right spot and then tuck it into the base (the base of the unit has clips to hold the cable when you are carrying it).   I would welcome any input on tripods and if they help get it pointed in the right direction sooner.  Anyone use a tripod that they like?

Where are these clips located because i think mine are on the top, but i am not for sure??  How do you figure out how deep you are too.  I was looking at that and there was little "AQUA-VU" writing on the cord but i have no clue what they are used for???  Any info about the tripods will be very helpful.

I watched a fishing show this weekend, where they were using it to troll with in alasksa, it was really cool, you could watch the kings come up and take the lure. now they have one that mounts to the boat and it drops down like an electric anchor, it uses foot controls to lower it up and down.

Are you sure that was an aquauveiw? We have cameras that actually attach to the downrigger ball(You can see the fish come right up and hit the lure). I was not aware that Aqua view made a camera fitted for this.

yes it was an aqua vue,  it almost looks just like an eletric anchor, except the fish camera was attached to it, it was foot operated with two buttons, I guess it is something new they just came out with. as for the camera that was used in alaska,I don't know what kind of camera that was, but I thought it was pretty cool to see the fish come up and hit the lure.

I've been using a paint stirring stick, with an alligator clip taped to the middle of it. Sounds funny but it works great. just lay the stick over the hole drop the camera down, clip the wire to the stick, then you only need to turn the stick.

I've got the scout and bought the non-motorized tri pod.....it works pretty well, like anything it takes some time to get used to it.....the easiest way that I do it, is that I put the camera all the way on the bottom.  Then I drop down another hole cut right next to it....once i get to the bottom with my bait, i slowly twist and spin the camera to find it, get it focused on the bait and then I raise the camera from there and relocate to my desired depth.....hope this makes sense....i've got it down to a couple of minutes to get it set up.......PM if this makes no sense...

Daffydone is correct there is a new aqua-vu coming out that looks like an electric anchor. And can be controlled by a foot switch. It'll use the same kind of tft display as on sonar screens. I asked aqua-vu how much it would be when it is let out. Everyone sitting down between 1500.00 and 1800.00 they weren't sure yet.  Needless to say I won't be running out to get one.  Craig

Won't the clip wear away the rubber coating on the cord???  well that is a good idea and very in expensive.  I hope when i get back from this long weekend trip there will be some ice to test it out on.

On another thread someone said they cut a slit in a five gallon pail top and slide the cord into the slit with a stop or something. The pail lid sits on top of the ice hole the cord goes down into, and when they want to turn the camera they just turn the lid. At least that is the way I understood it.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Marcum electronics makes a steering aid similar to the paint stick described. It's plastic and folds in half. I think you can view it at www.marcum.com. You'll have to do some clicking around but it should be shown under accessories.

I haven't had any problems with the clip wearing out the cord, and I've used the system for about 4 years. The thing to remember is to make sure the stick is always bigger than the hole. 2 winters ago I went from a 4'' auger to a ten inch, went all the way to the lake and the stick was too small.
