Shiners >> Chubs ?
« on: Jan 02, 2018, 08:16 AM »
Got to the bait shop yesterday morning and they were all out of shiners... chubs only, so I bought a half pint of chubs instead of trying to find another bait shop open with shiners on new years day.  I had never ice fished with chubs before, but I've heard of folks using them back in the day so I was hopeful.

I was set up by 9:30 and had two flags between then and 11:00 when my buddy showed up with his kids.  Both likely perch attacks as the chubs were dropped and mostly in good shape. My buddy had some shiners left over from the weekend and gave me a few when he was leaving about 1:00.

Now maybe the bite just turned on but after putting shiners on I caught three bass and a pick all in the next hour.

Has anyone fished with chubs before and had much luck?

One time I bought shiners and bait shop threw in some chubs as extra. Both caught fish that day. The one difference I did notice was those chubs could stay down the hole for hours or get whacked and yet still be lively.

Chubs are good bait and do well on the hook.

We've  won a bunch or derbies with big mummies ( chubs, killies).  Our winter trapping areas have degraded so we no longer can get good chubs.   Winter holes in the marshes are tough to find.

Wow!  So maybe it was a total coincidence?  It was a slow day to start with.  Maybe a little flash was needed or maybe it's just that I drilled the right holes in the right spots when I put the shiners on.

Thanks for the info guys.

If you can get some 4 inches or bigger they are great pike bait.
