Air pump
« on: Mar 07, 2017, 09:54 AM »
Anybody run air pump off sonar battery?
The small batteries operated (D,C&AA). Run out at bad times. I run extra plugs for phones and speakers but not the air pump for bait. If you do what pump do you use?
Found live well pumps but those circulate the water and feel they would freeze up in cold. Don't want to kill battery that I lose sonar for the day either.
The kayak guy run all kinds of stuff off single battery. Even have control panel with toggle switches. Water proof control panel. I could use some help finding them too.

A few extra batteries seem to be a lot easier to me. You can keep minnows in an unused hole too.

We use 6-9" shiners so couple dozen in a bucket is  a lot. @ $1.50 that can be an investment. Already carrying 12v for sonar just seams more efficient to run off that. Nothing worst than bait shock. Killing all your bait when you get there. From not mixing current water with lake water. They don't always come back and you could be out $$. Small batteries are not cheap and 12 volt is rechargeable.
What else can be run off the ION batteries ?
Now that's a question. If you could run sonar, lights, radio, pump and maybe heater too. I'd buy one then.

Do you run a generator to recharge batteries? I have to believe even a small riding lawnmower battery would run a pump long enough to get by for a week or so wouldn't it? If you have electricity just plug in a small Vexilar type charger and leave it on. But still, nothing works better than leaving them in a hole. Have you ever seen a bottom bucket? I buy lots of bait when I see good sizes and it lasts a long time, weeks at least. I just leave the bucket flush to the ice in the hole and raise it when needed. There's lots of homemade alternatives to the Bottom Bucket but you'll see the way they work if you look them up. This is all if your house stays out on the ice.

I used to have the same problem with the batteries but I got a little bigger bait cooler and just change the water out 2x during the day and you don't even need to use aerator.
A bad day of ice fishing is better than any day at work!

I have one of those bubbles aerators that are supposed to run 44 hrs on 2 D batteries. I have used it 2 seasons while catching shiners to get them home and on the ice and still using the same 2 batteries. I now bring an extra D battery cuz I just know that one of these days, they will die. I take the Batteries out during the off season.

Try this if perch fishing. You have your battery minnow bucket with airstone. My perch pond is 12'. I brought 15' aquarium air hose and attached to pump and airstone. Clipped a lead depth finder to the hose above airstone and let it freefall to silty bottom. For sure the marcum lights up like a christmas tree. Wait 2 minutes lift hose, Marcum clears and perch everywhere. Catch a few, they move away, repeat.

I'm sure you could run a small aerator off a flasher battery for days.
