Spikes and Crappie after ice out!
« on: Mar 06, 2017, 02:43 PM »
When the water warms a bit and the crappie bite starts, do any of you use spikes and how do you fish them. I seem to have a lot left because of the shoooort season. That is if they don't croak! :'(

The bluegills will love the spikes, ive caught many with leftover  icefishing bait after ice out but from my experience the crappie prefer a tube jig or fathead minnow after the ice is gone.
Just roll me up and smoke me when I die

How do you rig them or what do you put them on. Do you use a float?

open water crappie fishing I often tip hair , tube , ice jigs with spikes during a slow bite ....once the bite comes on you don't need them in fact it becomes a pain because  gills and dink perch will be  grabbing them ....wax worms ,meal worms ,mousies  all work

for the trout and perch, you can use them on a small teardrop jig or plain small hook under a bobber or using a drop shot rig.

When I used spikes, the shiners were all over it. Had to switch back to fatheads.

My favorite is a meal worms on a hair jig after ice out under a slip float. Meal worms seems to hold up better for me.

From my personal experience I only used the spikes during the ice season. After that my friend, either first that, or late spring I slay the slabs with a 1/32 jig head with a tube skirt. Red, black and white,  or all white in color has been my normal set up for over 20 years. Color I decide is based solely on the clarity of the water.
Hope this helps out my friend and as always TIGHT LINES EVERYONE

Thanks 585! Do you hop the jig head or let it sit under a float!

So do you use white in clear water or murky waters?

the water color counts but location counts more  if you fish sandy pond green  is always good  Oneida orange  perch or fire tiger  the fish your fishing for counts ! crappies white is always a good color where bluegills  purple  is pretty hot ....I think  playing around and  finding what works for you is what fishing is about .....oh one of my  favorite colors most people never carry .......gray , ever see a scud ? now add a spike
