Why haven't I been using a shelter?
« on: Jan 15, 2017, 10:06 PM »
Having owned a pop-up for the past several years, I finally made it a point to drag the thing out this weekend... Wow! Typically, I'm stubborn and just suffer the elements since I enjoy hopping from hole to hole, but I felt like I was living the high life out there. So comfortable, sitting with the heat cranking and lines staying ice free...
I guess there are times when it's worth the extra pain in the ass to drag a few additional pounds out there. Lol.

For me it would comes down to what gets you more fish; sitting in one spot and waiting or moving around and hunting down the fish... Both have a time and place, but most of the time I am moving... We only break out a shelter for kids and overnight trips...  On "bad" days I do flip over my clam scout.

For us i guess it depends on the weather for using a shelter. We always drag them out and set them up for the extra comfort of fishing indoors from the elements of mother nature. But if its a nice day (wind not blowing out of control or no snow storms) we flip over the 5 gallon buckets and fish with enjoying the great outdoors.

If the wife goes with me I take the shelter. If not It stays in the car or at home. Even when I take the shelter I do a lot of fishing outside of it and she stays put. Last time she out fished my 4 to 2. So much for moving around that day.

When my kids or my better half join, I take the shelter but use it as a hot house. Chairs, heater, snacks and hot chocolate/coffee. We fish outside of the shack.

It has enabled me to fish with the kids for half a day instead of just a few hours. They love being out there but when they get cold the trip is over. Now they can warm up and love it!

I've had a shelter of one type or another since 1991.  Rarely use it. If its gonna be nasty I don't go. Anymore 80% of my icing is front range or east and it just aint that bad. I don't do that -25F crap anymore. Slimers aint worth the pain. ;D

^^ Tru Dat what was it 4-5 years ago we fished WF  the low was -31 and the high got to -10 That one pretty much ended my days of tuffing it out. We use to do that -29 crap at 11 mile but usually by 10 am it warms up around 32. My blood started to gel at WF almost had to drink some of that Diesel 911

Flip shelters are great for moving around. Or, after moving around and finding where you want to be, then set-up. If you know the lake and where your going to fish, start there and start warm. I have 2 different shelters for different conditions. Worth the weight for me.

Jigsallot I have owned five suitcase and four flip shelters currently have a frabill two man Trekker. I cant remember the last time I sat in a shelter. If its going to be terrible weather I just dont go. Maybe it has to do with where I fish on ice these days which is no where near ski mountain traffic always metro ice. The weather really doesnt get that bad on the front range needing a shelter. When I was young shelters where great had a lot of fun using them but these days just prefer the simplicity of my med size jet sled and small amount of gear.

i have a two man flip hut that I take out every time. I rarely flip it over unless the wind is real bad or I am sight fishing. Like Slayer said though if its real cold I just dont go. I also flip it over when I have to take a pee. Works pretty well for that -

Shelters are awesome.  I agree Jim. I don't mind a little work dragging it out onto the ice.  With good boots, you can stay warm and fish all day and night.  Fishing is often great in crap conditions.  No way I would let weather keep me at home short of a full on blizzard.   Also puts you more in the zone when it's just u and ur line in the hole.  Helps Blockut all the surrounding distracations from catching Fish.  I haven't even considered not bringing my 2 man flip up clam with me no matter what lake I fish or how far the walk is.  It's coming with me.

THIS.   if i cant wear board shorts and pretend its florida out there im not going unless the bite is really good.

i fished on williams fork when the wind kicked up to 50 mph suddenly.... in shorts, lol.    (had my bibs and coat with me just in case, im not that stupid) not fun.    its why i love mountain spring ice.
