JIffy legend model 31 oil fuel ratio
« on: Jan 16, 2016, 08:02 AM »
need some iceshanty input  I have an older 3 hp techumseh AV520 Jiffy legend model 31 auger 1994  I just had the carb rebuilt by Eric's small engine repair in Ware  got his name off the jiffy on ice repair center list it runs mint now Eric said the ethanol in todays fuel damages the pump diaphram and fuel system and recommends I run ethanol free fuel in it to avoid future repairs there are a few to choose from and they come in quart cans of either 40 to 1 and 50 to 1 premixed using high octane fuel VP uses 94 octane with synthetic 2 stroke oil and fuel stabilizer the sticker on the fuel tank says 24 to 1 Eric suggested I add half ounce more two stroke oil to the quart of VP ethanol free 40 to 1 premix fuel to make it 24 to 1 that jiffy recommends  I know absolutely nothing about 2 stroke engines but I know 40 to 1 mixture uses less oil than 24 to 1 thats about it will using 40 to 1 burn out the engine prematurely ? any input on this would be greatly appreciated                               thanks bunches

I just had the carb rebuilt and its running mint on the VP 40 to 1 non ethanol fuel but the mechanic Eric added extra oil to it to make it 24 to 1 cause thats what jiffy recommends .  my question is will using 40 to 1 in an engine that calls for 24 to 1 wear the rings and cylinder wall prematurely seeing there is less oil in 40 to 1 compared to 24 to 1 ? i dont have money for a new one and I need this one to last me as long as possible the VP 40 to 1 non ethanol fuel comes in quart cans Eric said I have to add 1/2 ounce of oil to the quart of VP 40 to 1 to make it 24 to 1 so is it critical i use 24 to 1 or can I get away with 40 to 1 with no long term ill effects AKA prematurely worn rings and cylinder wall

Synthetic oils can be run at a lesser amount because of the lubricating properties of the oil.  If you are worried about it than add some more oil.  Make sure it is synthetic tho.  If you need some I have a large bottle of amsoil sabre that I can give you some of.

so running the VP 40 to 1 alone without adding extra is ok  wont hurt the engine in the long run ?

Howdy....  Pretty sure I read on here that Jiffy changed the 24 to 1 to 40 to 1 for their 2 strokes! I too use the Tru-Fuel 40 to 1 premix!  Runs much better and way less exhaust ooze than with Dino oils!!  Most chainsaw shops will have the pre-mixes! If you use search thingy you'll see people usin 100 to 1 Amsoil Saber in all their two strokes! Great concept but you have to find NON-Ethyl gas to mix it or you still only have gas that is crap in 30 days!  Just my $.02 O.P.

The trufuels have an extended life. Check the label, you may be able to save the fuel left in the tanks.   I use it in chainsaws and trimmers and just leave the fuel in all winter for next summer.

[/quote  thank you the fuel I mixed up last year was pump gas 87 octane with husky HP synthetic 2 stroke oil only good for 30 days . the VP 40 to 1 is non ethanol fuel premix just like the true fuel and is what I'll be using in my auger from now on  true fuel 40 to 1 uses 93 octane non ethanol fuel shelf life of 2 years  Vp 40 to 1 uses 94 octane non ethanol fuel with a shelf life of 2 years and for those who are brave stihl makes a 50 to 1 that uses 95 octane non ethanol fuel with a shelf life of 3 years I did my research  but was worried that less oil would cause long term damage to the engine thanks for all the input !!!!!

My jiffy runs great on the 40:1 trufuel. Always had issues with the 24:1 with the carb gumming up. Won't run anything else in it.

I run a 50 to 1 with stens oil or stihl(husky oil works too) oil mixed with 89octane and a splash of sea foam from any auto parts store.(sea foam counteracts the ethanol) I burn a lot of mixed gas with my line of work so tru fuel isn't a cost effective option.  The older models will run too hot with higher octane as I was told by a technician from Stihl.

I've been using Opti 2 synthetic at 100-1 in my Jiffy 30 ,three chain saws, and a 30 year old weedeater for over 10 years without a problem. It also has fuel stabilizer in it.

if you already have the oil you can buy the 4stroke synthetic fuel and mix your own,40:1 ratio should be fine. you can buy it in the gallon cans or the quart can and as mentioned it will keep for 2 years. I leave my auger full all summer so the gaskets and diaphrams don't dry out. no need to use an additive. I prefer th VP brand ,they have been making it for years, but they all work fine.

Agree ... go with the premix... simple, effective, clean, portable and cheap insurance against GUMUPS.

My jiffy runs great on the 40:1 trufuel. Always had issues with the 24:1 with the carb gumming up. Won't run anything else in it.

Now a days it's all about marketing.
Back when rhe original 2 strokes were made they ran SAE30 @25:1..as oil was formulated and improved. .ratios changed
Modern synthetic oil is far superior to the older oils...the engines do not recognise oil ratio only lubrication..I currently run all my equipment @100 :1 with amsoil..
What must be adhered to is the is recomendations from the oil nanufacturer..
FYI..jiffy has said that their oder 25:1 engines can run on their 40:1ratio...more evidence that it's all in the marketing
