Tiger Muskie Growth?
« on: Dec 21, 2016, 12:42 PM »
I was wondering how long it took for the muskies to get to catchable size (not necessarily keepable) after they stocked Healy? Thanks!

Tiger muskies were first stocked into Healy Res. in 2012.  There have been reports of tiger muskies exceeding 40 inches being caught at Healy.

In the right water (one with a lot of food) they could reach the 2016 minimum size of 30 inches (Wyoming regulation) in 3 or 4 years.  On  January 1, 2017 the minimum size limit on tiger muskie will increase to 36 inches  in Wyoming, so it may take a little longer for a fish to hit 36 inches.

In addition to the increase in the minimum size limit the daily creel and possession will decrease to 1.

probably they upped the size and lowered the limit because they have had ZERO to do with reducing the perch in there....except a lot of the larger ones....however a 36 inch on a jigging pole with 2lb line will be a blast !

Yes the musky in Healy is 30 plus inches. Guys have been catching them all year. Fun!!!! Now, just so you know for some reason?  Ice fishing for them the last couple of years has been slow. Spring and summer and fall fishing in the boat has been great. As for this fisherman Icing one has been really hard. I can see them on my camera and they don't pay any attention to my presentation but this year I bought a couple of jigs that I'm hoping they will munch. Don't be afraid to stop by, I'm out of a EVO 1 with a shanty flag flapping in the wind. Also as talking to Fish and Game the bigger the musky the bigger the perch. So I'm noticing the smaller perch catches out of Healy. Just Biology FYI I got some big jigs I'm going to try this year. ;)
No one left behind.

Thanks for the information! I wasn't meaning Healy specifically however the information was great. I know WGF have planted some in a few other places not long ago and was wondering if it would be fun to give them a chase if they had reached catchable size yet. Judging by the length of time and the amount of prey (expected) within the bodies of water they should be in the 20"+ range (not keepable but catchable).

Good post, I wonder it the northern (pike) method of a quick strike with dead bait would be the best?

Big enough to be keepers?

You are correct, as of today (Jan. 1, 2017) tiger muskie have to be 36 inches or greater to be harvested.  The daily bag and possession limit went from 3 to 1.

Heck Yeah. I'd just like to see one in real life, some of the pictures sure are pretty. Also please be aware that a tiger muskie needs to measure 36" to be legal statewide, I think northerns need to be 30" depending on the drainage they are in. Just in case ya catch one that's close. 36" fish, tight lines indeed!

This also started on January 1, 2017:  The only place northern pike have to be 30 inches long to keep is Keyhole Res.  In all other areas of the state they have to be killed when caught, no size or creel limit.

At Keyhole nothing has changed; northerns have to be 30 inches or greater to harvest and the daily creel and possession limit is 3.
