Ugly Stik GX2 ice rod
« on: Jan 03, 2017, 08:27 AM »
I'm just getting started and won't be fishing in a shelter and I'll mostly be at SEPA lakes. Does anyone use this rod? I'm wondering if it is sensitive enough to use a main rod and if the guides ice up easily.

I was wondering the same. I'm leaning toward the 26" med/light rod.

Unfortunately, I can't find a shop around me that carries them.

I have 2 ugly ice fishing rods. They are my favorite rods to use. Idk if they are GX2'S . The 1  Has a cork handle & the other is foam. I got the most recent one from 1 of our sponsers fish usa.

Not sure where you are exactly, but Fish USA (on line) normally has them. I bought one at either Dicks Sporting Goods or Field and Stream at the end of the season last year. Bass pro may have them as well. I have not used it yet.

I'm outside Philly so no real surprise the Dick's I went to had no ice gear at all. According to their website their closet store with them in stock is 70 miles away. I know I could order online but I wanted to hold one first plus I've had some rods shipped which were poorly packaged and I'd rather no go through the hassle of sending it back unless I have no other options. I bought a HT Iceblues 24" for panfish but I think I need something a with more backbone in case I get into some bigger fish. I'll eventually be fishing Marsh Creek so muskys are always possible and having a rod I probably won't break. At least that's my thinking.

I was at Cabela,s the other day and they had ugly stick ice rods, I didn't look at the different models but they had a very good selection of ice fishing gear.

Only place I've seen them is online so far. I'd really like to see how the tip is & where the back bone starts before I commit to one. Any one with handsom knowledge would be super helpful . THANKS!

i just looked and i've been using a gx2 for a couple weeks now. its stiffer than most ice rods id say the backbone starts at the second eyelet. i use a spring bobber with it for jigging. without that id say its better suited for dead sticking or possibly good for a jaw jacker set up. it would surely have enough spring!!!

I should have looked at them closely when i was there in October. I only saw combos but not individual rods.

yea mine is 28" medium action so u might be able to get a better action if your wanting to fish with just a stock tip and no strike indicator. I needed a new rod to use with an inline reel and i cant complain with either the way i have been fishing with it!

i know nobody enjoys giving them money, but walmart carries them online, combo or rod.  right now im fishing an extremely stiff dock demon, and extremly sensitve polar lights, looking for one in the middle.
