Ok, I'll tak a stab at it, fish Tobyhanna  next weekeend. The call is for rain and mid-forties Sat. (tomorrow) No weather cold enough to really tighten up the ice til Sun. night. Then it should stay plenty cold to make next Sat. a safe outing. My plan is to do responsible things around the homestead this weekend, so hopefully I can rack up some credit good for ice fishing next weekend.

thahks guys!!

You've got to get out of the lowlands!  We've been fishing since Jan 1st and have had a high of ten inches of ice to 5 yesterday.....As previously mentioned, Tobyhanna is safe.....and we've been fishing the development lakes that are private with good success.....2-3 lb bass.....perch to 12 inches.....bluegills that are better than hand sized...man...have i been eating a lot of fish!

in any event, now that the weather has become more seasonable, you should be good this after this week even in the lower areas...

You've got to get out of the valley and up onto the plateau/  We've had good ice since Jan 1st and have been taking bass and panfish with regularity. Tobyhanna has good ice and so do some of the other lakes around here.  WE've been fishing the development lakes with permission and have done well.  You might try Still water lake. Permits are available from the caretaker's home office at Camp Minsi off 940 west of the 380 interchange.  Good lake for perch and bass.

think i answered this same question in another post...but in case it doesn't get read, I'll re post here..

Rumor had it last year that Stillwater Lake would no longer be offering public access starting in 2006.... any truth to this? The long-time ranger there died last winter and they couldn’t get anyone to replace him. We used to get our permits from the Boy Scouts for $30.00.

I had been a permit holder for the previous 3 seasons but didn’t even bother this year. It seems to fish well for perch and bluegills during first ice but shuts down during mid-winter. Could be some oxygen issues once the ice gets thick and the massive weed beds die off. It’s a pretty shallow lake. We haven’t found anything over 9 feet... and that’s right at the dam.

Decent lake for bass during the open water season though... smallies outnumber largemouths by about 3:1 on most trips. Lots of chain pickerel too.

I'll check that out.  I'm goping over that area today and will be driving right by it so I'll stop and ask about the permits.  You used to be able to get the permits from the Allentown Boy Scout Of America office also.

We found a channel out from the Boy Scout access to the left of the rocky point there where the old stone piers are.  Caught good pickerel and perch there through the season when i used to fish the place.  Never did have good luck there for bass on the ice, but i never ice fished it all that much.  There are some good crappie in there, but i would imagine they would be back in the stump areas toward the back of the lack.

Also, if you know anyone who lives in Stillwater Lake development, you can get access without permit just by getting permission.  Stillwater Lake development and the Scouts share the lake rights.

Ammendment:
I stopped at the ranger office for CAmp Minsi today and you are correct in that they no longer sell the permits there.  They are however, available through the Main Office of the Boy Scouts of America in Allentown.  Didin't get the address, but you should be able to research that online or with directory assistance.

The ranger tells me that the anglers have been having success sometimes and sometimes not, but there is a guy who fishes there every day and has luck toward the back side of the lake on the left side.  He was out there when I was there today.

Good Luck!

The Boy Scout Council in Allentown is right off of postal road behind LVI Airport... it's about 5 minutes from where I work. I'll call and ask about the permits.

That's interesting about the crappies... I've never caught one but your the second person that has told me they are in there.

That old dude's name is Clyde (if he was wearing a faded red "hoodie" sweatshirt, that's him). He likes to jig for panfish while watching his tip-ups back in those stumps up in Robbins Cove (by the creek inlet). I swear he fishes there every day. He will talk your ear off out there too... nice guy, a real hoot when his other buddy shows up. It's like having the Grumpy Old Men out there.  :D

Updated 02/09/06:

You are right... I called The Boy Scout Council (behind LVI Airport) this morning and they are still issuing access permits for Stillwater Lake... $30.00 for the season, and another $30.00 if you want to launch a boat.

Their telephone number is (610) 264-8551, and you must have a current PA fishing license with you (or at least your license number)... and also be prepared to sign a waiver in case of an accident.

I asked her about the ranger and she confirmed that they have found a replacement, so it is business as usual.
