Otter Ponds
« on: Dec 26, 2016, 12:02 PM »
Have had good luck on Otter ponds early in the year in the past. I know we don't like to share spot information much on this site; however, thought we could discuss the last two ponds on the tracks. I know most people fish the last pond on the right, I actually prefer the left a bit more as it's not hit as hard. For those of you who like the left side, have you attempted the far and end of the pond with any luck?

Well they were on the front page of the Portland Press Herald yesterday, so I'm sure they'll all be fished out by the time the other lakes are available to fish.

I remember  when it was kind of a more secret place. it really get's hammered now, unless you're there at 2 in the morning to get a spot your kind of screwed. LOL

i went for the first time a week ago... during the day so only me and another group on pond #2... honestly it was not fun for me but certainly i understand taking kids and people who are new to the sport... for me it was like shooting fish in a barrel.. so many flags and brook trout but you know they are there and so hungry because so many get stocked in such a small place... reminded me of "fishing" in the ponds at sea world where they stock them with rainbow trout and you fish with pellets

I have had the same experiences there. Once day we went through 3 dozen bait and started using worms or dead shiners. Everything worked and it became more of you can go get that flag I'm tired :). Don't get me wrong I do love flag days, but its better when they happen sporadically, it is fishing after all.

I fished #2 on the 17th and yesterday as well. The difference in flags and fish was remarkable. Yesterday was more enjoyable though cuz I was actually able to have a "soda" or 2 without having to run out for a flag every 5 minutes.

I got there at 6:30 and snagged the last parking spot yesterday. Crazy

Definitely ready to get on some bigger lakes/ponds.

Same here, I think Worthily Pond is going to be the best spot on the first.

Not that they've ever been a very secret place but this is a joy of the internet...

That's why you don't see many pictures and discussions on here any more.

It's really too bad because this board used to be lit up. I've learned over the years that technique beats location many times. Plus I like meeting new people on the ice and telling fish stories. I've been helped a bit in the past even though this is a sport I've being doing since childhood with my grandfather and father. We always tended to fish roads less traveled up Andover way, so I really enjoy sharing information to those less experienced.

Otter is essentially a practice pond before the season kicks into full swing.

Rozzy - I hear you; learned of "Shanty" years ago from a guy we were fishing beside at the Mousam derby.  though I had been out a few times as a kid with my father, several individuals on the board were very kind and helpful with theory.  Will always appreciate that as I had a lot to learn (and still do!). This stated, I can see both sides.  When I first fished these ponds through the ice, I never worried about a parking spot.  I haven't been out this year but from the sounds of things, one may have to park down at the Sebago launch.

At least people are out enjoying the outdoors Maine offers.

Best of luck to you this season and perhaps our paths will cross out there some day.
