White Perch?
« on: Dec 23, 2016, 09:44 AM »
Anyone know of any Western Mass ponds/lakes (except the Quabbin) where you can catch white perch ?  I haven't encountered the species yet and would be interested in targeting some this winter!

I was gonna head over to Metacomet, and also try Mt. Warner in Hadley. Is there Crappie in Metacomet? cause my plan was to go after whites but if I come up with blanks then switch over to crappie.

Otis Reservoir. Try by the old state beach. Hit or miss.

I know folks who target the white perch in Big Pond, Otis. Apparently they're pretty common there. It seems to be an open water fishery, though. The few times I've ice-fished Big Pond, I've come up empty. Otis Res across the street grows them larger, but they also may be tougher to find. I have no firsthand knowledge about ice-fishing that waterbody, although it is on my hit list.

I've only fished Metacomet a few times, always when the water temps were in the 50s or cooler. I have caught crappie there on 2 occasions. The first time they were incidental, caught in early spring. The second time I was mucking around the lake in December of last year, actually targeting them. I didn't do so hot; I only caught 2 or so.

For what it's worth, Big Pond also has crappie. I can only attest to their presence in the lake; I don't know enough about numbers or size. I don't have a high regard for Big Pond as an ice destination, but other people's experiences may differ.

Probably a little over a decade ago, I laid eyes on my first white perch, caught out of Ludlow Res, maybe a couple of years after it was opened. Ice fishing there isn't permitted, and I think it has a limited open season.
I remember catching some small ones once on an impoundment of the Chicopee - Red Bridge Pool? The water there was dirty and I don't know how well it freezes or fishes during the winter.
